Has anyone come down from New Found Gap and stayed in Cherokee?

If so, where did you stay and where would you recommend staying and eating?

Thanks much!

Like lone wolf said Gatlinburg is 10 times better. The town has a couple of outfitters, great places to eat and plenty of places to stay.
And if your looking for a place to have a great breakfast I recommend The Pancake Panty. I have been eating at this place for as long as I can remember.

If you have the extra dough or need to bet-it-all, Harrah's Cherokee Casino would probably be a nice stay.

There's also a hostel. From the 2012 Companion...

Hostel: Gry (Grey) Wolf’s Hiker Hostel, (828) 507-5747, open year-round, tobacco freecampus. Bunkhouse and tentsites (reservations recommended); shower, laundry, fuel, short-term resupply; microwave, refrigerator, and other amenities in common room; one meal included, $15pp. Mail drops held for guests. Dog kennel and long-term vehicle parking for fee. Free shuttle to town, morning and evening shuttle to Cherokee Transit station for connection with bus that has scheduled runs to Newfound Gap for nominal fee. Hostel offers shuttle to Newfound Gap ($35, up to 4 guests) and Clingmans Dome ($45, up to 4 guests).

Yeah, like Lone Wolf said, but have you ever spent any time or even been to Cherokee?

Cherokee is one town I could not wait to leave. If you like cheesy tourists traps then it's ok. Made reservations at the KOA once. Stayed about twenty minutes the drove to the mile high campground while car camping when my kids were very young. We had been staying at national forest campgrounds for one night and moving on each day for about a week. I thought the KOA might be a treat for the kids because it has a pool. Both of my girls were asking to leave.

Pancake Panty? I'm guessing they are edible!

You could also insert Gatlinburg for Cherokee. I like them both!

Both locations are easy to get to with the new shuttle services although they do take time because of the distance. Both are tourist traps and if you do not like that atmosphere do not go! Although I do not like carrying 7 days of food ,I have been to both before and skipped Newfound Gap and waited to re-supply @ the end of the park. Next time I think I would take the NOC shuttle to the Gatlingburg side and ignore the bad and get a nights rest in a bed!

Cherokee is a gazillion times worse than Gatlinburg.

Unless you want to get a picture of yourself standing next to a real live Indian and stuffed bear. $5.

Or you want a tomtom made in China for your evening shelter entertainment.

You can get a decent meal in Gatlinburg as well as affordable lodging. Easier hitch.
