I might drive down and spend 3 or 4 nights in the area soon. Like the 1st week in FEB. Do some day hikes and take a leisurely look around. I was looking at Amicalola Falls Lodge or Unicoi Lodge. Not going to camp / backpack...
Any good or bad experiences ?? Other Suggestions ?? :-?
Thanks, AL

AF Lodge has more amenities and lotsa food on site, plus you could stay a night at the Hike Inn just off the approach trail - check it out.

Unicoi is closer to town but Helen's pretty dead now.

Hike-In and the AFSP Lodge are both good suggestions.

Depending on what type of experience you want you may want to consider Dahlonega. Inexpensive hotels like Holiday Inn Express or stay at the Hiker Hostel for cheap lodging and other hikers. Dahlonega has restaurants with alcohol as well as the Smith House buffet.

+1 on the breakfast buffet at the lodge. I think I gained about 5 pounds in one sitting.

I stayed at the AF Hotel when I was down there. Sweet buffet, nice place, but pretty expensive, if I remember correctly. I say expensive from the perspective of a college student without a lot of money...

I live in Helen and have had family stay at Unicoi several times. Very nice rooms with a great buffet. Lots of trails also and the AT is only 5 miles away.

Thanks for the feedback.. Right now a standard double room is $69.00 Sunday - Thursday at either place.

Also consider the Hiker Hostel outside Dahlongea . They are hikers and cater to people in your situation. They can give you suggestions for any hikes you might want to take. Also a lot less money but no food services . It is an easy drive to town with a good restaurant selection!

Stayed at Amicalola for my bday (near christmas), it was pretty great for the price. Its NOT the Ritz, buffet food was pretty good!! GREAT mountain view from the rooms (get a mtn facing room obviously). Be aware, there is no beer or wine store ANYWHERE close!

Also a lot less money but no food services .

They give you a free breakfast for the thru-hiker special.

If you have the dough, rent one of the "cottages" at Smithgall Woods State Park, just outside Helen. A side trail from the property leads to Dukes Creek Falls. Really beautiful place; if you're ever in the area it's worth a visit.
