I know camping is not allowed on McAfee Knob, but just wondering if there's in stealth spots just off the knob?

There is a good campsite just beyond near the shelter.

And the sign says "Anybody caught trespassing will be shot on sight"
So I jumped the fence and I yelled at the house
Hey! What gives you the right!
To put up a fence and keep me out, or to keep Mother Nature in
If God was here, he'd tell it to your face, man, you're some kind of sinner

Tesla? Really? It would appear that some people's understanding of music is about as deep as their understanding of morality.

If memory serves me right there is a shelter like 30 min before McAfee and just after, the one after has several flat sites that have fire rings. So there is room for a crowd. Easy to watch the sun set and hike back to the shelter.

About a half mile north of the Knob is Tinker cliffs. Lots of good (and legal) camping spots and great views over the valley.

Going northbound, Catawba Mountain Shelter is 1.7 miles before the knob and the Pig Farm campsite is .6 miles past the knob. Campbell Shelter is .7 miles past the knob. Tinker Cliffs is 5.6 miles past the knob.

I came very close to setting up there. McAfee Knob was fogged in, and I could barely make out the famous rock ledge people sit on for pictures - but by the time I got to Tinker Cliffs it turned beautiful and I could look down on the valley below. Thought about setting up camp early, but without water I just went on, the weather turned for the worst anyways.

No Gomer:),,, stealth meaning not right on the trail (AT), and "off the knob" (therefore not "illegal"), but closer to the top than Pig Farm campsite or Campbell Shelter. Or maybe I misunderstood you,, is it illegal to stealth camp on the AT?

The only reason its illegal to camp is because too many people have done it and still do it and the resource is suffering because of it.

Bans on camping are a product of resource protection not limiting freedom for poops and giggles.
