Plans for the year?

My plan is to make it to Damascus this year. I will be starting at Spivey Gap. Probably break it up into two trips.

Starting on Springer March 20-21 and I have until June 7 off work. I'm hoping to make it to I-64, waynesboro va in that time.

Not sure yet. I know the approximate timeline -- probably about 3 weeks somewhere between mid-May and mid-June (break from teaching). Also know that its going to be somewhere north of Va 603, Fox Creek (as that is as far north as I've gotten). Beyond that though, I'm still up in the air.

This year I'm scaling back, due to a broken ankle at the end of August. If all goes well, and it has so far (I can walk 3 miles now in an hour, my usual casual pace), I'm hoping to feel ready to section my home state of Connecticut late summer. Before that, it'll be walks in the local parks with my dog, introducing my granddaughter to hiking and camping, and working in my garden.

My plan is to head north from Harpers Ferry around early to mid-May and walk til I am tired of being out there. If that turns out to be Katahdin that would be great but I'm not setting any distance goals this trip.

Ahhh yes...another year, and some more sections. Let's see here, I did VA 611 to Pearisburg in January, and that was fun...a bit cold on Saturday morning (25 F). The loose plan thus far for the rest of this year is to do Pen-Mar park to Pine Grove Furnace SP in April, and NJ/NY (to Arden Valley Rd in NY where I started a section last year) in late May. Not sure about the rest of the year, but it'll probably be a couple of local sections here in VA.

Oh yeah, and I might break 1000 miles this year...woo hoo!

Will be picking up at Culvers Gap in NJ and heading north for two or three weeks in May. Then head back out for two or three weeks in September, picking up where I leave off in May.

Then in spring of 2013 do another couple of weeks, and finish it out in September of 2013, after I semi retire. Hopefully be hitting Katadin in Sept or Oct with the class of 2013.

I haven't actually done the mileage calculations, but I assume this is a reasonable plan.

Come hike up north a bit Jeremy, would love to get out there with you again. Maybe I'll have to revisit someplace in VA once you're up there.

As things have turned out, I typically do a hike in the spring and one in the fall. Planning on Bland to Damascus in March and 100 Miles in VT in October (trees)

That will bring me from Damascus to Franconia Notch...........would like to start getting in a 3rd hike each year as well

Really look forward to each hike.............

If I get 2 weeks off, then I'll ride the dog east and section SOBO from Kent CT to NT 17A where I left off in 2011.

If I can only manage 1 week, then I'll be sectioning the first 70 miles of the Ouachita National Scenic Trail locally.

Either July or August of this year the wife and I will hike Pinkham Notch, NH and go north. How far will be decided by how long I can get off from work. Hoping for 2 weeks but may have to settle for something less.

02-02-2012, 09:56
I keep trying to plan larger section hikes, and the trips keep falling through...so......this year, my new years resolution was to do at least 1 weekend every month, all year.
Jan-neels gap to unicoi (done in below freezing temps)
Feb-unicoi to dicks creek gap
March-Camp Hollow Rod to Dennis Cove road
April-Damascus to Massie
May-Newfound to Clingmans (day hike)
June-Harpers Ferry to Pa.
July-Nantahal River to Fontana
August-Newfound to davenport Gap
September-Roan High Knob to Indian Grave Gap (dayhike)
October-Indian Grave Gap to Erwin (with layover on shinbone trail)
November-Dennis cove road to Va421
December-Davenport Gap to Max Patch

If I can stay focused, I will have completed about 500 miles of AT and almost all of Ga, NC, and Tenn

Up to this point I've hike Georgia and the section from Grayson Highlands to Damascus and Evrything from the Tye River in Virginia north to Pen-Mar Park.

So me (and my two kids aged 12 and 14) plan the following: A short hike over Easter Week from Tye River south to James River (this will kick off with killer climb of The Priest -- so I'm trying to get back in shape so I'll enjoy day 1). As soon as school gets out (middle of June for us), We're doing Pen-Mar Park to Duncannon where we'll be picked up to go to cross country camp (my kids participate and I coach). We will then try to finish off PA after that. If I find another long week-end in 2012 I'd like to do Grayson Highlands north to where ever we can get.

Hoping next summer (much longer summer for us than this year due to changes in our school calendar) to knock out all of North Carolina and missing parts of Virginia so we will have hiked everything south of PA/NJ line. Though that might be a hair ambitious for me.

Starting my first section hike on the AT this year. Fontana to Damascus beginning early may. Still working on getting back to Austin or Dallas from Damascus - any thoughts on this? I need to be back by the end of may. Also, how tough is this section? I'm budgeting 12-15 miles per day with maybe 3 or 4 zeros thrown in there. Is that realistic? I'm in pretty good shape and should be carrying around 32-35lbs. Thanks in advance!

Leaving early to mid April...plan is to go from Springer to Harpers Ferry....more or less the half way point. Return next year and complete the second half. I'm leaving the door open in case I want to complete a straight through this year. That's why I'm leaving in April. We don't want to feel any pressure while hiking but still want to do the entire trail.

My friend and I did that exact section last June. Took us 27 days. That was our longest backpack trip so far. We did a Near-0 at Standing Bear, a Zero in Hot Springs, and overnights at Erwin and Roan Mtn (Mtn Harbor--great place). It was probably just the right amount of challenge for us...Had a great time!!

I did that same section last year.. I averaged the same 12-15 miles per day. (I was 67 last year.) Great trip

Getting out of Damascus is somewhat of a pain. Contact the folks at Mt Rogers Outfitters to arrange a shuttle. Last year I took a shuttle to Bristol, then a Greyhound to Knoxville for a flight to Dallas. That ended up as two days.

It might be easier to shuttle to a town with Amtrak and then to somewhere with an airport.

Flight to Atlanta on 8TH and plan on hitting trail that day. Going NOBO as far as possible in 14 days. I will be hopping on one foot if my Achilles does not heel quicker than last two months. Looks like we might run into each other on trail. Good Luck too all and God Speed!!!

Started at Springer 3 years ago - and did good mileage. So far I've made it about 20 miles north of Erwin to Iron Gap. This year work and family are making it harder to do more than a week at a time. This year (in May) I'm going from Iron Gap to Damascus. Should take 6 or 7 days. Sure wish I could take a month ! You and I are about the same age. I'm sure you can appreciate that I want to do more while my health is still great. ! Good Luck to you.

I'm not 'section hiking' but I will be on the AT again this year, the plan as of now is to hike from Pearisburg to Waynesboro or Front Royal depending on timeframes and other things coming together, this hike will be preceded by a thru-hike of the Long Trail so hoping to be pushing north from Pearisburg in mid/late August

I plan to finish northern Pa. (waiting for rattlers and copperheads to come out). We only saw one little copperhead between Duncannon and Port Clinton last November.

Should be lots of snakes (lots of bugs from warm winter to feed lots of small animals which will have large litters, clutches, whatever to feed lots of snakes). Should be interesting.

I've scaled back my planned thru-hike to try and complete Springer to Damascus in about 5 weeks. Husband was planned companion for thru but he bailed on me because of a job offer. I'm lucky he is understanding enough to be OK with me hiking while he house-hunts in the new job location. A good female friend who hikes and has worked with me for years in manual labor volunteer positions is between job contracts so she's decided to join me. We'll get on the trail on April 18th.

Hiking Spivey Gap to US 19E-61.1 miles.

Add a night at Mountain Harbour if you can, then get their breakfast - well worth the $9 extra - FANTASTIC meal.

When are you heading out for this? I hiked it last summer and it was one of my favorite areas. The Azaleas and Rhododendron were in full bloom on Roan and Jane Bald (lots of people too). Little Hump and Hump were amazing, we hiked over them on partly cloudy day. Sometimes we were above the clouds, sometimes in the clouds, sometimes in bright sun. Absolutely beautiful several miles, thoroughly enjoyed that hike.

Hope it's as great for you.

I'm going from Iron Gap to Damascus in May (hopefully before trail days).

Maybe I'll see you out there.

Started at Springer 3 years ago and just doing sections as I can.

Sure wish responsibilities would permit a "thru hike" - but I don't
think it's in my future.

Anyway - Damascus is a good target - - almost 500 miles into the trail and already
covered GA, NC and TN.

Just decided this spring to start section hiking. Starting in CT end of April headed out for 4 days. We will see how far north I can get, all depends on how much time I can get off of work but right now I have at least 2 more 4 day weekends (May and September) and a 5 day vacation in July. Shorter weekend hikes are doable as I live in MA and the trail is never that far of a drive.

AggieAl
04-08-2012, 23:27
I did that last year starting about the same time. Great trip. Getting into or out of Damascus is a pain. You might try getting a shuttle from Mt. Rodgers to Johnson City. That is a regional airport including Delta. I did a shuttle to Bristol and then a bus to Knoxville. That was long and a real pain.

Enjoy the hike.

I will be starting again at Damascus.

My son and I are going to do the whole GSMNP the first week in July. I've hiked the AT in lots of spots over the years but never really kept up with it, so now I'm gonna keep up with it starting with this hike. Beautiful area as I recall from many years ago. Had a L---o---n---g lunch at the Tye River with a major water bottle fight on a very warm spring day. Good memories. Climb up out of the Gorge was tough to take in late afternoon after such a long break, but hey, it's all good.

I'm in the planning stages with my Brother to do a section in Late July/Early Aug.

One of 3 options:
- Damascus to Pearisburg.
- Shenandoah NP
- 100 Mi. Wilderness approach to Mt. Katahdin

The VA sections are close enough to make it easy access. However in Late summer, it seems like we'll have to pack alot of water. Of the 2, my pref would be Damascus. Shendandoah just seems too busy and too close to the drive for my tast.

ME trip would require a train from NC up to ME, then some shuttling to Monson, then back from Katahdin. However, the payoff is in the splendor/solitude that would not be as easily found in VA.

My goal is to give my brother and I an experience that will possibly foster a potential Thru when he gets his diploma in another year.

At 13 lbs each, we've already got our packs outfitted with everything but food/water and a couple of personal items. Potential to drop another pound before we set out.

I'd love to hear feedback from anyone who's traveled all 3 locations. What are the good/bad of any of them.

Trail.BlazR - All three are awesome sections, however I would imagine Virginia will be pretty hot that time of year. On the other hand, if I were going to do a thru later, I might want to save Maine for last. Tough call, but I doubt you'll be disappointed regardless of your decision.

Just did Pen-Mar to Pine Grove Furnance SP last weekend. Fun section, but only one decent view (Chimney Rocks) in the whole thing. Loved the shelters in this section as most of them have caretakers, and are kept up quite nicely...you can't beat the hand sanitzer and TP in the privy at Tumbling Run. A fire ban was on in this section. Oh yeah, and where are these alleged rocks in PA...apparently they're further North.

My daughter and I will be doing our first of many sections in June. We plan on starting at Springer and seeing where we get in 7 days. We're hoping to get out of Georgia but it's our first real hiking/camping shot out of the gate so we'll see how that goes!

I'm planning to start where I left off last year, just south of Erwin on May 15th.. Devils Fork road or something like that. Discussed shuttle with Pipe Maker. Then walk to Troutdale VA. I plan to stop and see CC at Greasy Creek. I reccomend it she great. I just hope I time it right. She 's probably going to Trail Days. I also was told to stop at Kincoras? I can think of little else right now. I wanna WALK! Any good hints? Recommendations? DO's and DON'Ts? Thanks! Evenflow.

Hoping to bargin for two weeks off this year... Continue North from Greenwood Lake NY. Maybe a week in early June and a week in September. Then my usual night or two trips close to my home. I am within 2 hours of any section of the AT in PA, as close as one hour.

...NJ/NY (to Arden Valley Rd in NY where I started a section last year) in late May...
Just did this last week. Started in Delaware Water Gap and hiked to Arden Valley Rd. in Harriman SP. Dang, this section was a lot harder than I thought it would be. It was wet most of the week, which is what I think made it hard since there are a lot of rocks in this section. The piece in Southern NY up to Harriman was particulary difficult with several rock climbs mixed in. Also did not enjoy the descent down Agony Grind.

Saw 4 bears in NJ in the meadow after crossing Canal Rd. It was funny cause I didn't see hide nor hair of one until that day when I saw all of them in the span of about 3 minutes (mother with 2 large cubs, and the other bear was on it's own).

Starting at Deleware Water Gap and making my way north to NY. I am taking my time and just want to enjoy- I have not checked out the mileage yet, or how long it might take. Because of school, I will not do it all at once, but in smaller sections, picking up where I left off.

As of last week, I now have under 600 miles to go! Katahdin to VA Rt 606 (Trent's Store) took a mere 20 years. The remaining 594 will be child's play:banana

Knocking out another 500-600 this year with the wifey, kids and dogs. Got it spread out over 4 9-10 day trips. Already completed Waynesboro to the Keiffer Oak and just finished PA, NJ and all but 15 miles of NY this past week. Next up we'll finish NY, CT and MA then go south again in late-fall to wrap up Virginia (finally!).

Starting the SNP at Rock Fish Gap July 8 will hike the section to Front Royal. We will take as long as it takes. This will be our first section of the AT. I know it will be warm but we are looking forward to getting on the trail. Any helpful thoughts. Ive been reading many posts for four months. I think I know what I am getting into.... but there is always the unexpected. One thing about SNP is your never to far from civilization.

SNP is a good place to start. The terrain isn't too challenging, and there are some beautiful views as well as a few places to get treats or even a nice dinner. Have a wonderful trip and don't forget to tell us how it went!
