If it weren't for the ATC and all the work they do along with the local trail clubs there wouldn't be a trail for you to hike. Hence, if it weren't for the ATC you wouldn't need the map or the guide because there would be no trail to hike. I'm not a member of the ATC....at least not yet, but I have no problem paying a little extra for a map or guidebook through them seeing how much work they do for the trail. Just my two cents!

I have AWOL's guide, and it is pretty incredible! All the pertinent information you need, with a little extra thrown in!

You can sometimes get them from past thru hikers. Or get them at their sale, usually in the fall.

You get 29 maps and a guidebook, it's quite a bargain. Or you just get the first 2 (GA and NC) and if you find you can do w/out, don't buy anymore. And they're available at almost all outfitters along the trail if you think you want to buy them as you go. Which considering the statistics on dropping out, would prob be the way to go.

Maps? Why do you need maps? Don't be silly, maps aren't worth the weight. Go with either Awol's AT guide (I find this one amazing) OR with the Thruhiker companion. You don't need anything else. Save that money for some goodies in town!
