I have always hiked in khaki type shorts, but i am feeling the switch to a more athletic type shorts for the summer months. Anybody have any brands they prefer?

I used Ex Officio Amphi's for years, but recently switched to EMS brand (literally half the cost) and find them to be identical in terms of comfort/performance. I got the lightest zip-off pants/shorts that EMS has.

I can't imagine you'd have any problems with those shorts. I just like pockets, which I think I would miss with those. But as far as fabric, those shorts would be fine, probably very comfortable.

Great fabric. too much $$$$$. Keep an eye out on Campmore's sales and online only specials. Even REI outlet online has some good prices when fads change.

I think shorts are the single least important piece of gear; my only requirements are that they're synthetic and have a pocket for when I need to carry money in town. I wore $3 nylon Reebok tennis shorts from a thrift store for the entire AT. The next time I'm out for a long-distance hike, I might splurge on another $3 pair. With anything else--shirt, underwear (if applicable), socks, layers--I can see why you would want to shell out money for comfort and durability. But shorts? I don't see it ...

Does anyone have a different opinion?

I agree with scrub hiker. Any athletic shorts with pockets will work. You can probably find some for $5 or $10.

I got a pair of Reebok basketball shorts (I like shorts that come down around my knee, my thighs feel a lot more comfortable that way) that I got on a end-of-season clearance for like $3 a couple of years back, which I was alerted to by slickdeals.net (http://www.slickdeals.net). It's a poly/lycra blend. I very much like them and they're my go-to short for activities.

Going to keep an eye out for a new pair, though, because they've seen their day. If I can pick up more pairs at that price, I'll be sure to.

Columbia Titanium hiking shorts breath wel and dry well for hiking shorts.
I have a pair of speedo boxer type swim trunks that also dry and breath well. Cut out netting.
Running shorts are also great, and I use those in summer. I agree with cutting out the liner in those also.
