Hi All. My husband and I are planning a trip to Iceland in late August. Just curious, has anyone done any hiking there? We were planning on hiking for a few days/nights. Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks!

Hi, I recently signed up here for the same reason except I'm planning to do a similar trip to Andrews. I also recommend the link above, also have a look on YouTube there are plenty of vids on hiking Iceland.
There are quite a few sites that cater for ling or short hikes, have a look here to find walks closer to where you are staying http://nat.is/gonguleidireng/gonguleidir_allt_landid.htm

Would love to go to Iceland some day and do some hiking. Labrador and Greenland also. Work my way around.

Does the Kennebec Ferry guy work the IAT?

My wife and I have done two trips to Iceland (one was our honeymoon). On our second trip we backpacked 5 days on the Laugevegur, hot springs walk. Absolutely spectacular! You can carry a tent, you don't have to book huts. Be ready for horrible weather, at least one or two of the days. We had 40 mph winds at about 33 deg F and pouring horizontal rain/ice for one day. We grouped up with others and all headed for a hut at the end of the hike that day, and dried out using their stoves, etc since we were all hypothermic despite having good gear. But other days were fabulous, sunny and beautiful shorts weather at times. This is the most popular hike in Iceland, but you will be alone most of the time; it's long enough to think that you are really on your own exploring. Be sure to do the last day, from Porsmark to Skogar, or take two days for it. It climbs over a high pass and you walk on a glacier, then descend a beautiful valley with more waterfalls than I've ever seen. You can do this hike all yourself, just take the bus from Reykjavik to Langmanalear and start hiking there. You need to stay in specific areas, and pay fees but it's a worthwhile excursion!
