Hello, I am planning a trip for spring break in a couple of weeks and my guidebook to central va says this shelter was to be built in 2001. Does anyone know if it has been built and what the mileage is from the War Spur shelter?

Thanks,

I stayed there this summer 2004. It's a nice shelter, it had a resident cat there that kept the mice at bay. It is a long way off the trail, down the mountain. It has plenty of switchbacks to take you to the shelter. It's 12.2 miles between shelters, plus .4 of a mile off the AT. Hope this helps.

Good info thanks, I will probably skip it.. a quarter of a mile down the trail doesn't sound like fun to me...

I don't have the official mileage, but assuming that it is near the old Sarver Hollow cabin then it's about 14 miles north of War Spur Shelter, 8 miles north of Laurel Creek Shelter, and 4 miles south of Niday Shelter.

I stopped there in 2003 for supper and it is a nice shelter. The access trail went straight down this steep gully but there was flagging tape showing where they were getting ready to put in lots of switchbacks and make the trail easier, and I'm sure that has been done. It wasn't that bad a hike down and back, even at the end of the day.

I think it's more like 8 miles from Niday to Sarver. It's probably the best shelter in the RATC neck of the trail. Overhanging roof covering the pick nic table. I think the only one in the RATC that has this. The old ruins of the original Sarver Cabin are really neat to check out. Excellent water source here. The old cabin area gave me the :bse :dance (spooks).

Thanks again guys for all the good info! Now we need to get this shelter added to the section up above... so there won't be any confusion over whether it exists or not!
