FYI

Came across a sale on the SPOT @ $69.99 on National Geographic website (They have a winter sale going).

Don't know much about these, but price looks good ($149 at REI, and Amazon by comparison)

Based on picture, could posibly be last year's model (or older?)

I prefer the SPOT GPS that I got at REI (per REI.com, "The SPOT II Satellite GPS Messenger offers improved GPS acquisition and a 30% smaller and lighter design").

I like mine because it has a custom message button, an "OK" button, and a button to press when you start your hike, so it tracks you online. Also, the SOS and HELP buttons are covered, so you do not accidentally press them when you put down your pack.

A little extra money, more features, and I really got my money's worth. Something to think about.

Ross is right.

After I posted I went back and looked at the add. The SPOT for sale by Nat Geo is the original SPOT. The one normally sold for $149 is the SPOT II. I have used both, and can tell you the SPOT II gets a GPS fix much faster, and sends it's data out without the long delay the old ones had.

The original SPOT works, but for the difference in performance (and weight/size) the SPOT II is a better unit.

Here is a link (http://gpsinformation.info/penrod/spot/Spot.html) that compares the two.

Thats a great deal!

Its only $70 overpriced instead of the usual $149.

This is the 1st generation model - which I use. The 2nd generation model gives better signaling, is smaller, and easier interface. I encourage people to get the 2nd generation version. The real cost is in the annual subscription (~$165 with TRACK). The only advantage to the 1st gen is battery life, but few folks would ever care as both units run a very long time.
