View Full Version : Cost /Availability of Fuel

I would appreciate it if recent hikers could indiacte what they paid for fuel along the way. I am planning to use my alcohol stove and would like an idea of what fuel costs when it is bought by the ounce. I also have a Primus Techno Trail cannister stove which I could use if I knew that fuel for it was readily available.

Roger - if your planning on using your alcohol stove, the easiest thing to use is Heet or gasline antifreeze. It burns as well as denatured alchohol, is easier to find, and comes in a 12 oz bottle. Costs between .89 to $1.50 per bottle depending on where you buy it.

Ok so this forum is making me rethink a lot of things(thanks everyone) I was wondering also about alcohol fuel availabilty. Will I be able to find it everywhere along the trail?

Alcohol is becoming more popular along the trail. I'm told that you shouldn't have a problem finding either methanol or Heet.

I was thinking about that gas line antifreeze thing. Can you get it in the summer?

what the heck is Heet? I keep hearing it mentioned.

We had no problmes finding denatured alcohol anywhere along the trail. Never used the Heet or antifreeze gas line stuff. When we bought it by the ounce, it was usually around 15-20 cents an ounce, some places do it by honor system and donations, and lots of times if there wasn't somehwere selling by the ounce, we would just buy it a hardware store (a big can only costs a few bucks) and share it among 4 or 5 hikers.

I think I saw more denatured alc on the trail than white gas. most hostels have both and you either pay by the ounce or get it for free. Hell, we used to find canisters of both at road crossings. You may have to buy a can or two and donate to a hiker box, karma karma, but other than that this should not be a worry of yours.
