When is the best time to hike the New Jersey to Vermont section? Would like to beat the heat if possible.

300 miles DWG to VT/MA line - another 100 to Sherbourne Pass (Rt. 4). If you start in NJ mid-May and hike to mid-June, you'll minimize the heat. That's not to say you may not have some hot days but it won't be as bad as if you started mid-June.

Starting mid-May also means you should miss the black flies. However, you will have mosquitos so make sure your tent doesn't have holes. Sleeping in shelters is out of the question unless you have a steady downpour.

Spring has its rewards (wildflowers) but you're too early for blueberries.

Fall would be nice also.
