I'd be more concerned with the mice than bears.

And be prepared for a wet moist concrete floor . Although it is a historical shelter,it is not a fun one to stay at>

I'd be more concerned with the skunks than the mice.

i don't think fatman has ever stayed there. the first and last time i stayed in there, 1986, the skunks were everywhere. a dozen or more all nite long

The smart ones tent nearby instead. By the way it is DRY between Neels Gap and the next Gap and then between there and Low Gap so tank up at Neels and then again at the Gap between Neels and Low. I'm slacking 17 from Hiawassee today.

Could be wrong but the way I read that was as follows. Get water at neels gap, then there is no water till whitley gap shelter where there is, then no water till you get to low gap shelter where there is water? Yes or no?

I'm just going by the guide book, I've never hiked that part of the trail.

Read and try to decipher this though:

There's also multiple gaps in between these points. I don't fully understand what the poster meant, that's just my take of what he may have been trying to say.

If you know can you please tell me?

he's pretty much saying there's no water between neel gap and low gap shelter, 11 miles, which is not true

Ok, sounds good to me. Maybe what you mean is that since they're springs water can be found if you look hard enough?

water at bull gap is only 0.1 off the trail, if that.
easy to find
