A Navy bud told me his Uncle Burt had hiked the AT, and sent me his obituary. It read, in part:

"He was called the "Modern Daniel Boone" for hiking 1025 miles on the Appalachian Trail in 1940, from Moosehead Lake, Maine to Wind Gap. He made the trip alone with a 100-pound pack, using a compass on an unmarked trail crossing eight states. He later completed the entire trail."

He was born in Bethlehem, PA. He was a Navy and Merchant Marine veteran of World War II, and was a marine engineering instructor at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, Long Island, N.Y. He then owned and operated Stehly's Men and Boys Shop, in Hellertown, PA, for 33 years until retiring. Died April 6 1993 at age 75.

Anyone have anything else about his AT experience?

Thanks
