Pondering switching. My question is this, how much comfort am I going to gain? The air pads weigh a little more but I'm thinking they fit in a pack better. My ridge rest is kind of bulky. I can get a therma rest pretty darn flat.
So is an air pad in the 10 -12 ounces range going to give me a better nights sleep?

I used a therma rest for a while but switched to a ridgerest because I GOT HOLES in the therma rest too often. I also found the ridge rest to work well as padding in my frameless pack. The ridgerest has the virtue of being cheap while the therma is really quite comfortable. I got a new one for 2012 and I expect to use it until it gets a hole. I have never been successful at patching them. I hope it lasts through Virginia.

A few of the reasons I will not carry an air pad:

I will never carry anything on a thru hike for which a repair kit is sold.

My Z-rest is my pack frame.

I don't sleep on plank floors.
