I like anything and everything. Just throwing it out there. Seems like a long way off. On the other hand, doesn't seem like I have enough time to get all the details worked out.

No Vacation, by Apples in Stereo, or maybe Muse, by Exo-Politics; the first about a thrill seeker and the latter, about waiting.
I say any one of them that's not been yanked off YouTube for copyright infringement.
personal tastes, and it also depends on the sort of pictures you are taking - lots of people smiling? lots of quiet sunsets? lots of trees and nature? lots of clouds and stars? Different moods, different music. It used to be my job. Listen to the music - close your eyes - what scene do you see? there you go.
I like this because it matches the mood of the video so well. Careful, watching this will make you want to hike the PCT......

We picked 'Your Life is Now' for our AT video, and for our western hikes (JMT and TRT) picked "I Can See Clearly Now" and "Above the Timberline" to highlight the differences btw the JMT/TRT and the AT. Those 3 songs worked for us, as they highlighted where our minds were at the time of our hikes.

Try these- "Black muddy River" by the Grateful Dead
When the last rose of summer pricks my finger,
And the hot sun chills me to the bone,
When I cant hear the song for the singer,
And I cant tell my pillow from a stone,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own.
When the last bolt of sunshine hits the mountain,
And the stars start to splatter in the sky,
When the moon hits the southwest horizon,
With the scream of an eagle on the fly,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And listen to the ripples as they moan,
I will walk alone by the black muddy river,
And sing me a song of my own.
or "Walkin" by Widespread Panic.

Over the hills and far away-led zeppelin
If anyone's into folk metal, there's Korpiklaani's 'Shall we Take Another Turn?', and Laura Sullivan did a piece specifically for the Trail in her Mystical America album, which is half folk and half new age. There's also the compilation album The Best of Celtic Music, in which just about everything fits the mood, Traveller specifically. Those are all instrumental, seeing as I only know a few good instrumentals for hiking.

I'm more a movie soundtrack/classical/instrumental guy when it comes to making compilation videos. I made a Disney video of our vacation a few years back, and used instrumental Disney songs. Of course for our summer youth group I usually use pop songs from that year so they remember what was popular a few years down the road. I'd rather see a well done compilation of stills and very short video clips than a long amateur movie attempt.

"Through Hiker" by Ekoostik Hookah
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9f4r8jOu30
there's a studio version on Where the Fields Grow Green
thought I'd add the lyrics:
I can't stop here
in this town
cuz I'm a through hiker, babe,
and I can't stick around.
And I'm not stopping
in this life,
there's plenty of worlds to see,
but I'll stay the night
Do you have a bed for me?
A couch to lay upon?
I want be no trouble mama,
and I will leave by dawn.
I'm not weary
from the miles and miles behind
and I don't wanna be alone tonight, girl,
do you catch my mind?
Well, sometimes I'm by myself
once I had a hound,
be he ran off with another hiker
in a Green Mountain town.
I seen the Rocky Mountains,
I been the Appalachain way,
and I don't mind tomorrows
if I don't mind todays.
And I don't mind traveling around
with my belongings on my back.
And when I think I know where I'm at,
you know I'm way off track.
I got no destination,
the people, they accuse.
Thery think that i am aimless
and they think I got the blues.
And I try to tell them, Lord,
I try to explain.
Sometimes they listen,
but you know they just mostly walk away.
Life is a journey,
that's the head on the nail
The path you're on, that's the key,
and not the end of the trail.
Slow down like me now, mama,
you might have a ball.
You wouldn't want to die to find out
you hadn't lived at all.
I'm a through hiker, babe,
so now you know.
Would you like to come along with me,
cuz it's time to go.
Down the road's a mountain,
the other side of the stream.
I say we make some tracks now
and follow our dream.
I get a lot of great music from jamendo.com. Most of it is under a Creative Commons license, and all of it is free.

as a fellow Gamecock fan, why not "2001"?
It's "Also Sprach Zarathustra". But you're right, it was used as the theme from 2001, as it was about the beginning of the world. I like the original version better. The gamecock version is sped up too much - for time purposes, but you're right, it would make a good intro or during a time lapse dawn scene...

Miles from Nowhere by Cat Stevens
Lyrics
Miles from nowhere
I guess I'll take my time
Oh yeah, to reach there
Look up at the mountain
I have to climb
Oh yeah, to reach there.
Lord my body has been a good friend
But I won't need it when I reach the end
Miles from nowhere
Guess I'll take my time
Oh yeah, to reach there
I creep through the valleys
And I grope through the woods
'cause I know when I find it my honey
It's gonna make me feel good
I love everything
So don't it make you feel sad
'cause I'll drink to you, my baby
I'll think to that, I'll think to that.
Miles from nowhere
Not a soul in sight
Oh yeah, but it's alright
I have my freedom
I can make my own rules
Oh yeah, the ones that I choose
Lord my body has been a good friend
But I won't need it when I reach the end
Miles from nowhere
I Guess I'll take my time
Oh yeah, to reach there.

I'm planning my thru for 2013 as well. Whenever I have a super bad day at work I watch a slideshow of a guy who hiked it in 2009 and it makes my day better because of the song (and the beautiful pictures of the trail) and it helps remind me what I'm working to save money for.The song is Trapeze by Iron and Wine. My favorite song for setting video to (including hiking videos) is "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" by Floyd from the "Adam Heart Mother" album. (skip the first minute though)
I've used it for a few videos but, unfortunately, the ones I put on youtube have been now banned in the US for copyright infringement.
I don't understand why these musos ban their music for being used rather than just charge some money.
I would gladly pay for the rights to use their song.
At least it's still available here in Asia.

I, I'm a one way motorway
I'm a road that drives away
then follows you back home
I, I'm a street light shining
I'm a wild light blinding bright
burning off alone
(uh huh huh)
it's times like these you learn to live again
it's times like these you give and give again
it's times like these you learn to love again
it's times like these time and time again
I, I'm a new day rising
I'm a brand new sky
to hang the stars upon tonight
I, I'm a little divided
do I stay or run away
and leave it all behind?
(uh huh huh)
it's times like these you learn to live again
it's times like these you give and give again
it's times like these you learn to love again

"Blue Sky" - Big Head Todd and the Monsters
We've waited long for this day to come
For all the midnight lights we've burnt into the morning sun
I can't wait to see your sweet mysteries
The stars, the sun, the universe, the galaxies
Fly home on your silver wings
With a new song for the world to sing
Light this candle, make it right
Yes you can change the world
True love discovers. She stands, and she won't back down
Oh yes you can change the world
There is no other one just
See if you can find blue sky
Gonna chase the dream, gonna set it free
Gonna make it real, gonna make it shine, gonna keep it grooving on
One small stepping stone
Baby we're not alone
Gonna take you further, higher, faster then you're outta sight
You've got my flame in your fire
You've got my twinkle in your eye,
Reaching for the distant light
Yes you can change the world
True love discovers. She stands, and she won't back down
Oh yes you can change the world
There is no other one just
See if you can find blue sky
Don't change too late, hey, yeah yeah
Or Fade away, hey, yeah yeah,
My stars won't wait
Oh yes you can change the world
True love discovers. When she stands and she won't back down.
There is no other one
Believe and you will find blue sky

I used three songs for mine, so I could fill 15 minutes of video. I thought John Denver would be the best artist to go looking for music since his work sings of the glories of nature, and really that's primarily what I went there for. The lyrics seemed to synchronize with my message. Even if its not the best music for a compilation, I hope you'll enjoy it none the less! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F2N5l-Lhqc

I'm partial to instrumentals. They allow the viewer to let his/her mind and soul take in the video without the interruption (maybe I should be kind and say "interjection") of a singer's lyrics to steer their thinking in a certain way.
I'd suggest that folks view the video Five Million Steps to find out whether or not they agree with the above statement.
The music for the Massachusetts section is especially captivating.
