What sort of hike would I be looking at if I started at the northern terminus of the LT, hiked South to the point where it starts to overlap with the AT, but break off on the AT and follow that north to Katahdin?

A good trip, Most challenging trip you can do on the LT and AT. , 6 weeks or so

A hard one. But a nice one. The first 100 miles of the LT is pretty rugged, so it will either beat you into shape or send you packing home. Idealy, you'd want to start early August and finish the end of September. Take your time the first couple of weeks.

I was thinking of possibly making it a 2 month trip with my girlfriend next year, but I'll have to see. So that time frame works out perfectly. She really wants to do an AT thru, but she can't commit the time to do a whole one, but she also wants to do the LT. I figured this horseshoe-type trail might work out for her.
I am open for other suggestions, though.

If you do this in the July/August timeframe, you will go from lonely to overwhelmed by the number of hikers you encouter once you intersect the AT. Well, maybe not that bad...but definitely a change.
Great Idea - the total hike would be 657 miles - pretty challenging hiking - very rewarding - if you could average 14-15 miles a day, that would be strong - that would be a 45 day hike - I'd probably allot about 52 days to get it done (for most people) - this would give you a a few zero / nero days.

Unless my girlfriend was an experienced backpacker, I'd probably start at the southern terminus of the LT and hike to Katahdin. My newbie 16-yo brother and I started at the northern terminus late July 1979. While a fit high school basketball player, he didn't realize what took to hike all day in hot or cold temps (a cold front came through a week later just north of Mansfield). It's tough, but wild and beautiful.
A most Rewarding experience.
