Yes they will and yes I have.

I've also used lined running shorts, but they will not take as much abuse as hiking shorts.

I have, and don't care for all scrunchy elastic in the waistband,to much chaffing YMMV

Huh? Little early to be hitting the bottle.

Swim trunks are just nylon shorts with a mesh brief. Unless we're talking about a Speedo here. Avoid those.

Did that once. That mesh liner was like a cheese grater. Never again.

Mesh liner never bothered me, but some people who hike in swim trunks cut out the lining.

I cut out the lining regardless, I would definitely do it if I was hiking in them otherwise yeah they are fine, same as any nylon shorts

Works great for me. I found a pair with more than one tiny pocket.

My hiking shorts are Walmart swim trunks (solid black). Usually you can find the ones with a zipper back pocket and 2 front pockets. They wash and dry easily. The only problem is the rough mesh as mentioned. Cut it out or sow a soft chammy in it.

I use lined running shorts from Target. They are cheap, light, and quick drying.

Running shorts, basically what they are designed for.

I have one pair of boxer type Speedos that are really quick drying and very comfortable fabric that breathes well.
You have to get the right fabric.

I have on a couple of section hikes used swimming trunks but I cut the liners out and used copression underwear from Walmart. I liked the swimming trunks because they were cheap and dried easily.

I got the worst chaffing ever from hiking in shorts with a mesh liner. Now I just wear nylon shorts with compression/bike shorts underneath. I almost never chafe now.

I used them and didn't chafe with the mesh liner. Try them with the liner first then remove if needed. Try to find some that come up well short of your knees so you have more freedom of movement. I later switched to running shorts and liked them better because they were shorter and dried just as fast. If only they made them with pockets...

Saw it all the time last year, mostly younger guys in board shorts, which don't have the lining.

I use Columbia hiking shorts with the mesh lining. The lining in these shorts are softer than the linings found in swim trunks. Works well for Richard and the boys. :)

Works well for Richard and the boys. :)My Speedo (boxer style) trunks have the same soft lining, and also a lighter and more breathable and quicker drying fabric, similar to my grey Columbia Titanium Omnidry hiking shorts. Once you have one good set of trunks you tend to through all the others away. I still like the hiking shorts, but sometimes I prefer the Swimming Trunks. They are about the same weight, just a different fit, different colour (black), and fewer pockets. You have to know what fabric to look for though. You have to develop a feel for it.

I like baggy running shorts also. Not as quick drying, but lighter, and better in summer I think. You can get some with some useful pockets aso. I don't always use my shorts pockets, but they are handy sometimes and good to have.

Hubby cannot wear mesh lining. BAD chafing. He likes his sportkilt.

the bigggest problem with the lining is it can hurt your head if you know what I mean (abrasion)

I cut a strategic hole in the front of the lining. Otherwise, they're not good for anything but swimming, and even then you'd want to limit the time.

I wear these all the time. Mine are made by speedo, and have the mesh liner. I like the liner, but I have to wear compression shorts underneath when I hike as my thighs rub and get raw. I love the shorts as they are pretty tough, and last a long time. They dry quick, and have front pockets, and I really love the little side pockets with a velcro closure. I make copies of my maps, and keep them in my pack, but I take todays map, and put it in a ziploc sandwich bag, and put it in the side pocket. Whenever I need to check something, or make sure that I am where I think I am, just pop your little map out and check it with out digging in a pack, or unfolding a big paper map in the rain or wind. It's waterproof, quick and efficient. I like these shorts so much, I have several pair, and this is all I ever wear on the trail.

Ever wonder why so many native to the great desert areas were such heavy, all-covering clothing..? ;)
