Hey I have been into rock climbing over the past 3 months and was wondering if there are any good bouldering problems along the AT that would be worth bring pair of climbing shoes?

Might be better for traction than hiking shoes / boots in a few short sections (a mile or two) in NH and ME, but definitely not worth carrying.

when youu're in the whites you can hit square ledge directly across from pinkham notch, but you'll need a rope. in NY some of the best bouldering in the NE is at the gunks, roughly an hour north of harriman outside new paltz at minnewaska state park.

The cardinal question before putting anything (besides first-aid and shelter) in your pack is: Will I use this item every day?

Yea. gunks bouldering is not "the best" i am curious of the other places he's actually been to. it is also not all that close to much of anything.

If you can get into N. Conway when you reach NH then IME has a consignment section where you could probably pick up some shoes cheap.

i would not carry climbing shoes all the way. you're on a hike not climbing trip.

I am an avid climber. Along the AT are several decent areas to climb. I was surprised to see a number of chalked up boulders at the NOC. While you "could" climb, you most likely will not. At best you would climb for an hour or so a week, and that is certainly not possible every week. Leave the shoes. While you are hiking you are hiking. Climb after.

Self portrait free climbing under Tinker Knob. Great photo opp! Some of assents out of notches in Whites climbing shoes could be justified.

hmm a few more sections and i might have to bring them for newly arragned planned zero days. Be a lot cheaper then spending them in towns
