is it possible to take a hammock on the appalachian thru hike without having to go to ground mode?

In a word. Yes. There are not many places on the AT where you can not find trees to use.

It's not called the Long Green Tunnel for no reason. Tons of thru-hikers hang the whole way.

not a problem. some will say the whites, but i had no problem. if you want to stay in a hut ask to borrow a pad or just hike on to below tree line. i only stayed in madison hut. others will say the smokies, but the shelters are so large you can hang inside, i did.
Admittedly, I've never thru-hiked. That said, in all the sections I've done, I never had a problem finding somewhere to hang my hammock.

kayak karl has it right on. the two challenging areas are the smokies and the whites, but even they are do-able. if you keep on hammocking through your thru it will be because you really enjoy using a hammock. finding places to hang will not be an issue!

We need to follow "Go Green concept". Government not allowed to cut trees.

I did Springer to Hot Springs in "08" and I had no problem finding trees, I even hung a couple nights in the Smokies.
