I am seriously considering a thru-hike either this year or next (prob next tho). I work @ Rock Creek Outfitters in Chattanooga, TN and met with and listened to JFD the past 2 days and, in addition to talking to thru-hikers I work with, am strongly considering finally thru-hiking. I really want to do a SOBO because the Smokies are my home and I want to be there towards the end of my trip. When do most people going south start their thru-hike?
I believe Baxter SP in Maine, opens to overnight campers 6/15. Seems like most start in late May or June. and finish around Halloween or Thanksgiving. But I'm probably wrong....
I was there both days, great presentation. Good luck on your SOBO. Talk to Katie, she did a sobo, several yrs back. She would be a lot of help to you. She seems to be at your hamilton place store more. Great gal

I think the seasonal (most) rangers arrive 5/15, but I have not heard of the trail being open before 5/22. Some years it is not open (or reclosed with late snow until the first week of June.
Mid to late June may be the peak, but there is not much of a pack with sobo's.
