If you saw my earlier cooking reports, I did some fancier cooking (omelettes) in Cooking Report #1 (http://adventuresinstoving.blogspot.com/2012/03/jetboil-sol-aluminum-version-cooking.html) and Cooking Report #2 (http://adventuresinstoving.blogspot.com/2012/03/jetboil-sol-aluminum-trail-report.html) -- but I didn't use the Jetboil Sol's "cup." I used a nice MSR Blacklite fry pan.

But, what about the Jetboil Sol's cup? Is it only good for boiling water? Or can it do a little more?

I thought I'd find out.

Please join me for Aluminum JetBoil Sol -- Cooking in the Cup (http://adventuresinstoving.blogspot.com/2012/03/jetboil-sol-cooking-report-3.html) as I try the aluminum Jetboil Sol's cup out on a hopefully representativel trail type meal.

I'm not sure how relevant testing is when done in the kitchen. I can make lots of things work wonderfully when I'm in kitchen, but things are different when on the trail.

The real test is non instant rice. Just cooked basmati rice this weekend with my 20 year old whisperlite. The thing is heavy but has great control on the flame.

During my thru hike last year all i used was the jet boil. cooked all my meals in it. even the cheezy stuff. clean up is easy just boil some water and put some cocoa in it and ur good. i never used it to only boil water, that just seemed dumb. never had any issues and the jet boil never failed me.

There's some truth to that, but click through to cooking report #2 (http://adventuresinstoving.blogspot.com/2012/03/aluminum-jetboil-sol-trail-report-2-and.html) and cooking report #4 (http://adventuresinstoving.blogspot.com/2012/03/aluminum-jetboil-sol-trail-report-2-and.html), and you'll see that I'm able to do things -- things that depend on low flame -- out in the field.

If you've got a 20 year old one, you might just have a real keeper. The top of the jet on the original Whisperlites is flat. The newer Whisperlites have a conical top of the jet. The original design simmered MUCH better than the newer ones.

However, the very newest Whisperlites, the 2012 version of the Internationale and the new Whisperlite Universal, do simmer well.

Purchases in 1991 or 1992. Flat top on the jet. Only replaces a few o-rings and the leather pump part. The trick to a nice low simmer is adjusting the pressure on the pump. For low pressure flame you will get a yellow flame for about 30 seconds until the fuel line warms up enough. This is after priming.

Purchases in 1991 or 1992. Flat top on the jet. That's the one. That's the best simmering version of the Whisperlite Classic (white gas only) that there is. The current version of the Whisperlite Classic doesn't even come close.

They have however redesigned the Internationale, and the new version (January 2012) simmers pretty well. The new Whisperlite Universal (also Jan. 2012) also simmers well.
