If anyone has seen Derek or spoken with him, please call the Park Service at 865-436-1230. He left a motel in Cherokee, NC, about 4am Thursday and his vehicle was found parked at Newfound Gap. He was carrying only a dark blue daypack - no sleeping gear or a tent. Derek was extremely depressed when last seen by family and friends on Wednesday night.

FurloughThanks, Furlough.

The missing man lives in the same tiny community as I do and works with my SIL. Co-workers believe he has gone off into the woods to live off grid. He has been obsessed with survivalists for several weeks. The concern is he is woefully unprepared for such an undertaking and may not be able to find his way back to a trail or road should he need to return to civilization.
