For those of you that like reading books about hiking around the world, in February, the publisher W.W. Norton & Company released a book by Peter Potterfield called “Classic Hikes of the World.” The 225 page book is 9”x11” and has some stunning photography. It is a collection of hikes from 6 continents and 11 of the hikes are in North America, including the Wonderland Trail, the John Muir Trail and the White Mountain Traverse. It does not, however, include any of the long distance trails.

All of the 6 photos in the 53-mile White Mountain section are mine including a 2-page shot on Franconia Ridge. I also proof-read and edited the original copy for that section of the book (there is a one word error there which isn't mine). The book is a little pricey but I found a new copy through Amazon.com for $20.00, which is about ˝ the list price. If you get a chance to buy it, or check it out in some bookstore, let me know what you think of my photos. You may recognize one of the photos that was also on the cover of the 2003 ALDHA Companion.

Wow old fella, congrats.

I just got Walking the Worlds Most Exceptional Trails as a gift. I have only skimmed through it, but it looks pretty neat. It gives sample iteneraries that include backcountry accomodations such as huts and stuff.

Both books are here:

if you'd like to read a book about a through hike the hard way, see if you can find a copy of "The Long Walk". It's about a Polish POW who escaped from a Soviet Gulag during WWII and hiked through Siberia, the Gobi, the Himalayas, and into British occupied India.

One of the interesting footnotes in this book is the supposed sighting by the principle source for the author of the 'Yeti' while crossing the Himalayas.
