I don't recall ever seeing petroglyphs on the AT. Are there any?

I have seen petroglyphs a number of places in the west and southwest, but I don't recall seeing any in the east. Did I miss any?

Here is a link to the ones I saw yesterday at Huerfano Butte, AZ -- https://picasaweb.google.com/1129680...eat=directlink (https://picasaweb.google.com/112968072096587968801/HuerfanoButteArizona?authuser=0&feat=directlink)

There are some pictographs near Hot Springs. Some petroglyphs not far from the trail in Georgia. A mound site in Franklin.

There are petroglyphs in Bellows Falls Vermont, they are interesting but not worth a side trip from the AT unless you are really obsessed with petroglyphs.

"Obsessed" is probably too strong a word, but I do enjoy photographing petroglyphs. I have seen quite a few and I wonder about how some of the same symbols show up in very different places. The ones I saw yesterday in the Arizona desert look very similar to some I have seen on the Pacific Coast of Washington state.

http://www.danaxtell.com/bf/bfpetrog2.html Take a look, they have had battles with graffiti "artists" from time to time. I think they inspired the Happy Face!

There were references to pictographs in an exhibit at the North Museum(associated with Franklin and Marshall College) in Lancaster, Pa. I believe it was part of their permanent exhibit. Saw it maybe 2 yrs ago. The pictographs were on rocks in the Susquehanna River. If I recall correctly they were covered by dam backwater courtesy of a local power company.

The ones near the trail in Georgia are called the Track Rocks (or Trackrock) and are near Blairsville. Worth a look, and I think you can go north through Brasstown Bald and then west along one of the trails to the rocks. They are in a gap with a road, so driving might be easier. Near Silva NC is the Judaculla Rock (sp) off NC 107 south of town, also worth a look, but too far to walk from the trail.

If you pass through Bear Mountain zoo in NY, there is a trailside museum that showcases local colonial/precolonial history. If I recall there was a small exhibit on petroglyphs alongside the information on the area's indigenous tribes. The entire museum was quite interesting if you are a history buff.

I seem to remember an old thread discussing petroglyphs at Long Creek Falls on the AT south of Hawk Mtn shelter in GA? Was it just graffitti or am I hallucinating about this topic? :)
