What is the current status of Apple House Shelter? The A.T Guide says the shelter is to be removed in 2012. If the shelter is in bad condition or has already been removed, are there good tent sites in the area? Thanks.

Last I heard from Mountain Squid, the shelter was dismantled and materials awaiting to be removed from the site. Tent platforms will take its place. There are some level areas along the trail and in the field across from the old shelter site.

honestly, I'd be kind of afraid to camp there anyways.

at least with the shelter all you had to do was shoot them as they came thru the doorway! now what?

Why would you be afraid to camp there?

The shelter is (was) a short, easy walk from the road and historically, this was a very hiker unfreindly area. A lot of hard feelings about the Forest service taking over family farms for the trail. Those memories are fading, but still linger.

Anyway, by the time you get to Applehouse, your about ready for a shower and resupply, so most go the extra mile to Mountain Harbor B+B, which BTW, puts on one of the best breakfists you'll have on the trail.

Second on Slo-go'en's post...the shelter was a party spot for local teenagers to drink and party. Just hike on to Mountain Harbor Bed and Breakfast...they have a hikers bunk room that is nice with shower. The piled up wood there from the shelter in no time should be burned by the kids in a fire pit.

Even though Terry and Mary can only accomodate about 6-7 in the barn/hostel, they have a B&B for the haves, and plenty of sites to put up a tent behind the barn and along the creek. They are great people.
