View Full Version : Sleeping bag sugestions-down or synth, 30 degree-ish around 2 pounds?
Hi
Looking for a bag that is lighter than my heavy Marmot Trestles 15 -it is about 3 lbs 8 oz. but warmer than my Pounder. I have used synthetic up till now, mainly because of the newbie rain caution curve. Open to down now.
Looking for about a 30 degree or so bag (erring to the lower end) and would like to stay under $250. Any suggestions?
My local outfitter had a Vaude bag (Featherlite 350) but it seemed a little to good to be true for the buck fifty price tag.
Mainly hiking around Pisgah forest trails and the NC/TN sections of the AT during spring summer and fall.

If you are using a shelter that provides coverage, I would definitely go with down. Much lighter, more compressible. Also most are coming with some sort of DWR shell, light moisture from being outside or bumping against inside of a tent won't be a problem. In that price range the Marmot's are great bags and have excellent history here. You can find some Western Mountaineering bags sometimes in that range too.
A lot of people also recommend using a quilt. I was just researching this myself and found the following. Great recommendations on Backpackinglight.com and great price for the quality/temp range

I'm in the Marmot Arroyo. 30 degree down bag, right at 2lbs in a regular I believe. I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Moontrail.com had the Marmot Atom's for a good price just recently. It's a 40 deg bag but very light and roomy too.

Western Mountaineering summerlite, goes down to 32 deg and is 1.3 pounds +/- a few ounces. If you need a little more warmth bring a liner.

golite's stuff isn't qute as good as WM or the cottage industry stuff, but it's discounted pretty steeply right now.
Might want to check it out.
Also, down quilts are a way to save some weight for a given rating. Something to consider....

GoLite does make some nice stuff and I have a few of their products. I was just out in CO and stopped by a few of their stores, tried out the 3 season Adrenaline bag. Very nice bag, but just a warning - it is very narrow. I'm 5'11" about 175#, more of an athletic build and it felt tight. Some really like the center zip.
Also if you are interested, call the local stores. They carry different inventory than what's available through the website and have some killer deals on 2011 bags and other gear. I think the Adrenaline in long was going for $199! The Fort Collins store had good inventory.
