The Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail recently sent a representative to Washington, DC to participate in the annual American Hiking Society Advocacy Week.

Now the Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail are asking residents of North Carolina to write their Senators & Congressman in support of the Mountains to Sea Trail East Plan. While the trail is largely built in the western part of North Carolina, it remains to be completed in the eastern Part of the state.

Please take a minute to visit the following link to learn more about the great MST; http://www.ncmst.org/wdcaction.htm

Thanks!

I will repost this in the NC newsgroup that I frequent; maybe we can get some more support.

Here in the east it remains basically a road walk. Of course here on the outer banks it's a beach walk.

That's what they are trying to address. The MST East plan is available for download on th FMST website.

Letters or calls from NC residents to their Congressman & Senators could be very helpful in eliminating the road walks, and getting trail on the ground.

Brushy Sage:

Thanks for the link Amigo! This is REALLY good news for the Mountains to Sea Trail. This takes them one step closer to a completed trail between Clingmans Dome and the Outer Banks. In '04, the Mountains to Sea Trail was identified as one of (5) priority gaps in a proposed 5,000-mile trail system here in the southeast.

By the way, Jeff Brewer and Darrell McBane will be at the 3rd Southeastern Foot Trails Conference at Table Rock State Park from April 28 - May 1. Its not too late to sign up and attend. I hope to see some of you there!

I have to share a funny incident from last week on Clingman's Dome. My nephew and I had reached that point from Fontana Dam. Two and a half days of some hard hiking, to say the least.

As we stood somewhere on Clingman's, looking at an AT sign post, there underneath was the small Mountains-to-the-Sea plate and logo, which shows mountains on the left side, "downhill" in the middle, and flat waves on the right.

Of course we're still headed north on the AT, but my nephew sees that graphic logo on the AT sign post and sincerely asks, "Does that mean it's all downhill from here for us?"

It took me a second to realize he was serious!!! Or, just HOPEFUL, perhaps?!
