The state of Maine is funding an investment grade study to build a privately funded Interstate across Maine east to west. I expect it will run parallel to the south of the 100 mile wilderness and cross somewhere in Monson before heading west through a very undeveloped portion of Maine before hitting the border. It cuts 500 Kilometers of driving for Canadian truckers running between the Maritimes and the rest of Canada. The supporters behind it have a lot of political clout. It will be funded privately as a toll road.

A rough map is in the link.

I expect it going to raise a ruckus far more than the north woods national park proposal.

If it's a privately funded toll road, then can it even be an "Interstate" highway (part of the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System)?

The article says nothing about "Interstate"; I believe it's just a typo by the OP. Seems like the state just wants a connecting east to west highway, and it's been tossed around for decades.

It's also not a Intrastate highway, this is a deal between Maine and Canada.

Interstate 92 was the designation used in the past for an east west highway along RT 2 between Northern New York, Vermont NH and ME eventually runing through Eastern Maine.
Many Interstates start in the US and end at the Canadian border. As for the Interstate designation, I beleive there are several interstates in existence owned/leased by private entities.

I was just going off the article and the map shows nothing near those states; the map shows this highway connecting two major highways in Canada (New Brunswick with Quebec) via Maine.

FWIW, here's Interstate 92 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East-West_Highway_(New_England)

It has been in the "works" for many years. And wiki linked this story, which seems to be what's in the OP http://bangordailynews.com/2012/02/16/politics/transportation-committee-passes-bill-for-east-west-highway-study/

The PA, OH, and IN Turnpikes are toll roads, as is the Tri-State and Skyway in Chicago. All have Interstate Highway designations (I 294, 90, 94, 80, 76, etc). So maybe it is possible. Not that is matter what you call it.
