The first day from Springer you'll visit Long Creek Falls, a Kodak opportunity. Continuing northward on the AT about half a mile you'll come to a gravel road. Hang a left there for 100 yards or so and check out Hickory Flats Cemetary ("Campers Welcome!") with a giant pavilion, indoor privy, and the only self-powered merry-go-round located at a cemetery on the AT. If it looks like Hawk Mtn shelter will be crowded this is also a good overnight alternative.
