No bills beyond my vehicle. Responsibility is relative. Same age.

I have 5k banked for the hike (plus extra for that vehicle payment). I'm in the process of saving for time 'after' while I look for a new job. If I didn't need to save for life off the trail when I'm done ... then I'd be making my thru-hike attempt this year instead of 2013.

Greetings Oldbear,

I was just looking through the registered class of 2013 and your post caught my eye. I will be turning 60 as well, only in September. (You are obviously much older than I am ;-) My wife Terri, our dog Charlie & I plan on beginning our attempt on March 1st. We will need lots of zero days! Actually, we will become grand parents in January 2013, so my wife wants to make sure we have some extra time to head home to see the baby every 6 weeks or so. Take care and we'll see you down the trail.

Trail name is "Critter" . I am doing my best to go ultra light. Got a long way to go. Took a job at the hike-inn on the approach trail inside amicalola park. Will be shuttled by Hikers Hostel from ATL and staying the night there, then shuttled to the trail the following morning. If we get a group together we can get a discount for staying at the hostel, really cheap $$$.

I am still on the fence about doing the hike this year, it will require taking a semester off of school in spring and push me to finish by mid-August but I am leaning towards doing it because it is calling and my spirit is craving it! If anyone wants to talk about planning, shoot me a message!

I'll am not longer looking at doing a thru-hike so I can be taken off the list. It's bittersweet but with a wedding to go to smack dab in the middle it would just be too tough on the pocket book. Planning on hitting the trail in early June to hit the harder part of the trail from Harpers Ferry to Maine. Looks like I'll be a section hiker next year.

You can start at Amicalola State Park and hike the blue blazed "approach trail" 8 miles to Springer. The approach trail was actually part of the AT until 1958 when the southern terminus was moved from Ogelthorpe to Springer.

Hey Everyone: I will be starting on March 10 at Springer Mountain. I will not be doing the the Approach Trail since I have done it three time already. I don't see any need to hike it again. Instead I will start at Big Stamp Gap, back track to Springer Mountain and the starting plague, then head north. First day will not be much mileage since I know me well enough that the night of the 9th I won't be getting much sleep since I will be thinking about the hike. I can use the short mileage to make adjustments and shake things out. My trail name will be LeConte. LeConte Mountain is one of my favorite mountains in the southern Appalachians. I lost count the number of time I have hiked that mountain sleeping at the Lodge and the shelter.

Tentatively signing up for a March/April start. American living in Germany by way of Colorado and getting a bit disillusioned with the corporate world. I grew up in Georgia and went to College in Dahlonega, so I should be able to hitch a ride into the Trailhead with a family/friend. Been trying to organize my life lately, and I think maybe 5 months in the woods will do it for me. :)

Trail Name: I'm sure someone will come up with something along the way.
Direction: NOBO
Estimated Start Date: April
Approach Trail: I grew up near the trailhead, so I'll be hoofing it in from Amicalola.
Additional Info: Hit a hump in my life recently and need some time to re-evaluate my priorities. Objective is to summit Katahdin on my 30th Birthday in late September.

What is the alternative? Starting right at Springer?

While there are several alternatives, the majority of hikers drive to the Springer parking lot on FS42 which is 1 mile N of Springer. Hike S to Springer, then turnaround and hike N.
