On the southern A.T. in New Hampshire about ten mile from Hanover and half a mile east and downhill from the trail. The Dartmouth Outing Club is now building another Shelter on Moose Mountain that will be closer to the trail. Here are pictures from the old shelter.

Stayed in the old Moose Mt. Shelter on a section hike this weekend... it may look a little primitive but it kept the pouring rain off our heads, so we enjoyed it. The new shelter is still not finished yet -- the trail to the new shelter was (intentionally, I assume) blocked off by brush, so we didn't venture down to it.

The new shelter has been open for a while now (http://www.whiteblaze.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/3871/password/0/sort/1/cat/500/page/1). In late June the signs for the old shelter were still up. A hand written sign on a shingle indicated the new shelter was about 0.2 north of the old shelter trail.

Stayed there early August 2004. Most beautiful shelter on the trail (due to its newness). Hundreds of tiny toads everywhere! Privy didn't have any walls or stairs yet, but was open for use. Spring was down by the other shelter though. Long hike down and back up!

We're still putting the finishing touches on the shelter but it is very much open and welcoming to hikers. We tore down the old shelter and burned the debris.

The water source for the new shelter can be reached by heading north on the AT or the shelter loop trail. The water source is just past where the loop and the trail come back together and is marked. We scooped out a small pool for filling water bottles and such. It is not the greatest but trust me, it is the best one we could find. If it goes dry in the summer there should still be water lower down at the old watersource (they are in fact the same stream).

Word on the street is that it leaks a bit, we'll do our best to get to that and fix it.
