Sleeping bag for VA: what degree/synthetic or down

1) Will long johns, a fleece pullover & fleece hat be sufficient for a North Face 40 degree synthetic square bag for a central to northern VA hike at the end of the month (May) and part of June? Tried a liner with the bag on a shorter hike and didn't like it at all. Don't like the mummy bags either - too confining.

2) Or should I suck it up and get a 30 degree synthetic mummy bag that adds another pound? Or really suck it up and get a down bag that'll lessen the load?

How serious of a hiker are you?
Are you a cold sleeper?

For myself, I'd probably do #1,unless I I could afford a down bag. Then, I'd just go buy a down quilt.

I get cold easy. I use a Montbell UL #3 and still get cold. My son however uses a marmot aspen 40 and is warm down to the mid 30s with his fleese and base layer. Both are good options.

All depends on you, how warm you sleep, and how much weight you want to carry.

You might on occasion see temps down around freezing, but more likely lows in the 50s. Door #1 is almost certainly fine.

However, you could find a good 30-F down bag without sucking it up too much.

I normally use a 40* bag supplemented when necessary with thick socks and a wool cap that time of year. Northern VA is frequently in the 40's and low 50's at night in early June.

I had a north face 20* synthetic bag. Maybe it was due to the fact it was about 5 yrs old but it lost all it's insulating value. Go with Down for sure if you get a new bag.
