I was wondering how long it would take to get from my house to the AT. So I started checking all the major crossroads and was surprised to find that a large part of the AT is about the same distance from home. According to Google Maps, from my home to the trail road crossings at:

US 15 near Duncannon PA = 10 hr 24 min = 609 mi
US 11 near Carlisle PA = 10 hr 21 min = 607 mi
US 30 near Chambersburg PA = 10 hr 6 min = 589 mi
US 40/I70 near Myersville MD = 10 hr 17 min = 602 mi
Crss US 50 near Paris VA = 10 hr 49 min = 607 mi
US 460 near Pearisburg VA = 10 hr 5 min = 606 mi
Cross US 52 near Bland VA = 10 hr 1 min = 606 mi

So on the 554 mile hike form US 15 to US 52, I get 3 miles closer to home!

Nine miles to a trailhead directly on the trail, or only seven miles if I want a one mile hike up to the trail first.

Google Maps doesn't calculate red lights and add 1/2 to 1 hour.. Good Luck with this.

Ah, but I can get to the US 40 crossing in MD with only going through one stoplight (at the highway entrance 2 miles from my house). After that it's interstate the whole way.

2-3 miles and I can hope on the AT in MD at either the Wolfsville Rd. shelter or the Rt 77 crossing. Or 5 minutes in the car to Raven Rock. Spend a lot of time at Raven Rock rock climbing.

We live about 40 feet from the Trail. It is about 5-10 seconds to the Trail. Of course I live in Damascus. The folks at the Hikers Inn live less than a foot from the Trail. My wife and I run the Dancing Bear Vacation Rentals and have for the past 8 years. It has been a very good business for us but now we are ready to move on so we have our place up for sale. We have met so many great people, both hikers and bike rides and some have become close friends. We will miss that part of it but we are ready to down size our place and up size our travel trailer and hit the road a lot of the time. The economy the past few years have not really hurt our business because the Creeper Trail is still a good economical trip. We have about an 75 % percent guest return rate, mostly due to the fact that we rent to non smokers only so a great many people really like that and return often. If you want to live in a Trail Town and be active with the Trail, Damascus is a great place. \

So, you and the missus want to slow down, sell your business and do some travelling? For a 13 year old, that's quite the accomplishment. Been married long?;)

19 hours and 40 minutes to the AT crossing of I-70 near Frederick, MD from the west side of Minneapolis. Of course, I've already done that section (1979) and only have Maine to go, which is 26 hours by car. Needless to say, I'll be flying into Manchester or Portland and catching a shuttle.

45 miles to Sams Gap, 50 miles to Max patch, 62 miles to Davenport gap, 93 miles to NewFound gap.
It takes me about 1.5 hrs to most anywhere on the AT in North Carolina and the early part of Tennessee. Erwin, Roan Mt, Kincora etc. I'm on the South side of Asheville, so this adds an extra 15 min or so of travel.

90 miles from my current location but I use to be within 20 miles when I lived in Dahlonega. That's to the trailhead on Springer of course. However, from the nearest road crossing, Woody Gap, I was a little over 13 miles from the AT in Dahlonega.

Well thank goodness I'm not from West Texas - and not just because it makes me further from the trail! If you've ever been to West Texas, well, no explaining necessary! Although Big bend is nice, I'm originally a Yankee so all of Texas feels like a barren wasteland to me.

The nearest section for me is about 1 1/2 hours- Deleware Water Gap. I have not tried the NY section yet, it may be about 15 minutes closer, but not much...
Hey, anyone try the NY section near NJ? What are your favorite sections in that area?

...Hey, anyone try the NY section near NJ? What are your favorite sections in that area?

I grew up in Northern NJ (Bergen County) where the closest part of the AT was in NY, in Harriman Park. It's where I first saw the AT and hiked it along with the network of other trails in the Park. I liked it and still do. The large lichen-covered rocks are fun to walk across (they're not like the sharp, pointed rocks of PA and other places). Although the trail doesn't exceed 1,500', there's a lot of strenuous up-and-down. A thruhiking buddy of mine said the 16 miles he hiked from Rt. 17A near Greenwood Lake to Fingerboard Shelter was his hardest single day until he hit the Whites.

Harriman's network of trails allows you to do loops and see the lakes throughout the Park.

I think it was Blackrock Mountain where I was able to see the NYC skyline on a clear Fall day.

By car it's about a half hour to DAM
By foot or bicycle, its about a half mile to the Va Creeper Trail and then just over 8 miles to the caboose in Damascus.
Or, I have taken back roads to the foot of Holston Mt. then taken a logging road to the north end of Abingdon Gap and hit the trail.

Having lived in Silver Spring for 30 years, I knew that leaving home 4:30 on a Friday afternoon would take much more than 65 minutes to cover those 52 miles.;)

5 minutes to the AT at Nolichucky River / Uncle Johnny's.

Or I can get up off my sofa, walk down the sidewalk, walk up Martin Creek Rd to a side trail and be sitting in Curley Maple Gap shelter in about 1.5 hours.
