Just wondering if anyone has flown commercial airlines lately and carried their trekking poles onboard ?? Was their any hassle from TSA in terms of security ??

Thanks in advance ...

Sure have, bout 3 weeks ago. Broke em down and passed them through the security check. Handed them to me and I was on my way.

I'm not taking a chance. Am flying out Sunday a.m., but went to Goodwill and bought a suitcase for five bucks. Will put my pack and poles in it and toss it when I get to Atlanta. I'll carry on a few things, I suppose, but won't try my poles.

yea, when we went to the Grand Canyon last year Delta gave us a big hassle. We tried to carry them on, but they first said there was no way that was happening. After much convincing (and the fact that the issue was going to cause us to be late for our flight), they allowed us to tape the carbide tips up real well with packaging tape, then place them in a cardboard box, and securely tape it up as well. Problem was finding a cardboard box that odd shape too. It was certainly a hassle, and next time we will certainly check them (just wrap them in a sheet or something so you dont risk the airline breaking one).

same here... we pretaped the snot out of our packs, poles and all and they were pretty good about it. Even struk up a conversation about where we'd been. Of course, i forgot my keychain nailclipper and bout got arrested for it.

Got a funny story, my grandma flies every year to IN for x-mas and this past year she packed a set of silverware as a gift in her carry on... imagine "U" escorting an ol lady with all sorts of knives and such, all bearded up like a thru hiker, wearin a beanie, and looking like a terrorist. Man! She got the whole gammet guys, strip search, ripped her bag apart, bout gave her a heart attack, and they were looking at me like I was insane!:datz

I flew Delta in 2003 with my trekking poles in checked luggage no problems. I found a large mailing tube maybe 4 inches in dia which the poles fit into, taped up the ends, and checked it. The stiff tube kept the poles from getting damaged.

I picked it up on the oversize luggage carrosel with all the snowskis etc.
