HONG KONG (AFP) (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1516&ncid=1516&e=1&u=/afp/20050408/od_afp/healthhongkongleech_050408113104) - A Hong Kong woman hiker who washed her face in a freshwater stream unwittingly returned home with a leech embedded in her left nostril.

The woman did not realise anything was wrong until two weeks later when she felt there was something in her nose, the Hong Kong Medical Journal reported in its April edition.

A first attempt by the family doctor to remove it failed due to profuse nosebleed while a second attempt in hospital was also unsuccessful as the leech retracted into her nose, the journal said in its report on the rare complaint.

Doctors finally managed to remove it using a nasal spray to anaesthetise the five-centimetre-long (two-inch) bloodsucker a month after it had invaded her nostril.

"After two minutes, the leech slowly moved out of the antrum (sinus) and was retrieved with forceps," it said.

There is an ameoba that lurks in some eastern waters (rock quarries and other dank nasty areas) that is rarely encountered. It has a tendency to crawl up the nose, burrow thru to the skull and spread an incurable infection that is a truly remarkably slow and painful death.

They make leeches look welcome.

I think this settles the debate over filtering.
She should have filtered.

Filter before washing your face? Hmmm.

I contracted amoebic dysentery (sp?) on a trip to Bali when I was 8. It was the second worst vacation I ever had.

In the middle of the night....I had a spider crawl up my nose once. I clearly felt it crawl up and sat bolt upright. It was in there.

Nobody believed me, i was about to drive myself to the ER.... I could feel it crawling around, struggling to live as it was being "drowned" in whatever mucuous was forming and bogging it down in there...my eyes watered....

I took a sniff of some eucalyptus nose clearning goo, and I gagged and swallowed and hacked up a wad of yuck.

What was in it? A big black dead spider.

Glad I ddin't swallow it so that I could prove I KNEW that I had a spider crawl up in my nose. It was a gross feeling knowing it was in there "dying".......and i couldn't get it out!

I can't even IMAGINE a leech.

I wonder what they did with it when they got it out.
do you think they gave it to the woman?
If it were me, I think I would want it.
I would take it home and make it sorry.

The leech was only doing what leeches do....look for something to latch on to and eat.

In '04, there was a group of us lounging at a remote road crossing in Virginia. We were pondering where to get some drinking water. An older Israeli gentleman proceeded to remove his water filter from his pack, and was going to filter some water from a literal mudhole in the road. Amid the (loud) protests of fellow hikers, he finally decided not to follow through with his original plan, which was a good thing. The mudhole contained several insects performing the "dead man's float" on the surface. We ended up taking small amounts of water from each of our respective containers, and filled the thirsty gent's bottle. Hopefully he found more suitable water down the line. I hate to think what would've happened had we not been there to protest. In all likelyhood, he probably would've been fine, but it's just plain gross nonetheless.

And to think that a few days ago we were concerned with removing nose hair. Maybe we should leave the nose hair to strain out the leeches. :D
