The Sea to Summit silk bag liner is like $60. Can't I just buy a silk sheet and sew it up? I don't need it mummy shaped or anything. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

that would be fine. are trying to gain 10 degrees or keep bag cleaner.
another option is silk shirt (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___68162) and pants (http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___68164). i know same cost, but duel use also.

Silk by the yard is fairly cheap. Buy some and sew it up as you like it:
http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/silk/habotai.html (http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/silk/habotai.html)
The unit mm here is not millimeters but momme a unit of silk weight; I think 8mm is about 1 oz/square yard.
Probably 8 or 10mm would work for a liner.
Don't count on it subtracting 10 degrees from the sleeping bag's rating.

As a newb, is cotton or silk warmer as a liner like this?

Silk by far. I get silk and other types fabric from Dharma Trading (http://www.dharmatrading.com/). It's a fabric crafts outlet. They have many weights of silk, and my guess is that if you call them, they'd be knowledgeable about fabric weights.

Cotton is not good -- it'll get damp from perspiration then take forever to dry.
Nylon is also good, but heavier than a really light silk.
A single layer of fabric won't add much warmth unless your sleeping bag is drafty.

What about a nylon liner?

Nylon gets stinkier than natural fibers.

What sort of liner would you recommend if you're only looking to protect the interior of the bag from dirt & stuff, and don't want to add warmth?
