I use 100' of 550 cord/bag . What I'd like is a little input from you guy's/ girl's . Is 100' to much? If so what is the average length? I was thinking50'/60'. Thanks HS

Paracord is overkill for thru hiking in general much less bear bagging. Way too heavy.

You can get by nicely using 50 ft. of 2mm cord. Buy a little extra and cut 10-12 ft. for a clothes drying line too.

Cheers!

Do a google search for the B.E.A.R. Bag system. You'll like it.

You're far more likely to be murdered by a family member at home than killed by a bear on the AT. If there's a bear out there meant to do you harm, you'll not dodge it

If it rains, wet food.

Wow a strange analogy. First the idea of a family member murdering you, etc.. ??

Anyway, there are practical ways to deal with bear encounters. The idea you cannot outwit it is not true. I post a few bear tips (http://blissfulhiking.blogspot.com/2011/09/bear-facts-of-life.html) on my blog.

Double bag it? Roll the top, then tie it? Seems like this could easily be done with a garbage bag while keeping the food dry.

Actually it's kind of like watching an LA police chase, you know it's going to turn out bad, but you just have to watch :)

I found the perfect tree once, and after a few near misses I made it over the branch, I bent over to pick up my food bag and there was a pair of broken glasses on the ground right next to my bag, not mine. (Ouch)

As for the garbage bags. If it's just for a night or two, I guess it would work, but they will not last long. As for line I use 50' 1/8th Amsteel Blue and a sea to summit ultra sil stuff sack.

amsteel only goes down to 7/64. zing-it 1.75mm or lash-it 2.0mm (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15211) works the best. arborists use it. very smooth.
