Have chosen stretch between Hot Springs NC and Damascus VA for first foray on AT. Will do hike last three weeks in August. Can anyone direct me to website that posts average high and low temperatures and average rainfall at 2,000 to 5,000 foot elevations in this area. This information would help me to select shelter type, sleeping gear and clothing.

Alternatively to weather website, someone's experience along this stretch of the AT during August would be helpful

Many thanks,

For full information, check out The Weather Channel's website. For a quick answer, the average high/low in Damascus (1928 feet) in August is 84/59 f. The average monthly precip is 3.62 inches (the second driest month of the year). In real terms, in August, it is going to be very warm and very humid during the day and night. It might only rain occasionally but you'll be soaked with sweat every day! Nonetheless, still a great time to hike.
