I have heard of some using cell phones, kindles, ipads etc. while on the trail. Wondering which is your favorite device?

Kindle keyboard 3G.

Free 3G service in 85 countries (literally, I don't pay a dime and I can use the internet anywhere I want). I use gmail to send texts directly to phones, and I've actually dropped my current phone service to just use my kindle + gmail in order to cut down on expenses a little more.

Perfect for thru hiking as it gets reception in a lot of places, weights 8.5 oz, plays mp3s, reads books, and can send text messages without a cell phone contract/service plan/monthly fee.

I'm just hoping that cold weather doesn't kill it.

I like the shuffle idea... no battery robbing screen backlights and such. Do they even still make those?
I just have an iphone, but hate the idea of killling its battery by accident overnight, playing music.
