Don't hike with them, but I do keep a set in the vehicle. Sushi is my guilty pleasure and I partake a couple nights a month.

It's crap like this that adds up and causes people to arrive on Springer Mountain with a 65 lb pack.

I forgot a fork or spoon on a weekend trip once. Made a pair of chopsticks out of a couple of twigs, and they worked just fine for most things.

While the ones shown are of little value to backpackers, wooden chopsticks work well in cold weather. No cold metal to freeze to your lips.
Or, you may prefer a plastic spoon, but the wooden chopsticks are probably cheaper.

I have lacquered chop sticks I bought in Japan in 1971. UL and a piece of art. Don't take them hiking though I suspect that every Chinese restaurants will have disposable chops sticks they will give you. But they aren't nearly as pretty as mine!

Yer not a true UL hiker unless you cook your food in a vapor-gear noseem 0.001 oz cook pot and eat your food out of a origami folded maple leaf with your bare hands.

A true ultra lighter does even carry food, it's heavy.

And a true Environmentalist doesn't exhale, it's CO2.

Eating with chopsticks, which were first used around 2,000 BC, provided the unintended benefit of preventing illnesses by interrupting the hand-to-mouth transmission of germs.

I suppose you could always whittle some chopsticks on the trail. Anyone try that? It's not like its hard to find sticks.
If you whittle some good clean bit of virgin timber it's probably free of Hep A and Hep B.

Every Chineese Buffet I have ever been in has fresh clean wooden chopsticks. Why would I want to carry my own personal pair, I just don't get it.

I may have misspoke on Hep B, but it is estimated that 90% of all Hep A cases in China are caused by chopsticks.

Not chopsticks per se, of course, but the way chopsticks are used. Chopsticks are placed in the mouth, and are later placed in the communal serving bowl. If someone at the table has Hep A then you have the potential transmission. Hep A can be transmitted a couple weeks before one has symptoms.

So don't use chopsticks. And don't double dip that chip!

My 12 year old son has eaten with chopsticks on the trail since he was 6. He whittles them himself (from dead wood) just about every trip, takes about 46 seconds. Oatmeal is a bitch though.

Me too! When I whittled myself the chopsticks I suddenly had a "duh moment" as I realized this is very likely where the first pair of chopsticks came from: someone unprepared for the challenges of eating ramen noodles. :p

Not for nothing, but I feel that this is a case of correlation not being the same as causation. If the people ate the same way (from a communal serving bowl) but used forks, the forks wouldn't be causing the spread of Hep A any more than the chopsticks are. What spreads Hep A is the same thing that spreads trail runs: people putting their germs into a communal food source rather than taking their portion in a hygienic manner and eating it individually.
