I am new to New England, more specifically Maine. I am having a crisis!! I was wondering if anyone out there might be able to help. I have not been able to find anyone who sells landjaeger in Maine. Granted, I just started looking around. I am missing my landjaeger on my weekly hikes! Now that the weather is steadily improving, I will be hiking more...

Anyway, if anyone can direct me to any places that sell landjaeger, I would greatly appreciate it. I figured the hiking community would be the best place to start asking my question. :)

Thank you!

Has it occurred to you that people will have no idea what landjaeger is?

I guess you googled it too :)

Some kind of dry sausage typically used on camping/hiking trips with origins in Germany or Austria.

My apologies! I had noticed Wise Old Owl had mentioned it in the "Grocery Store Backpacking Food" thread, and got excited by the prospect that others knew what I was talking about. I was in the hopes other backpackers would know what it was, since it is a wonderful snack to pack on a backpacking trip.

Since it seems it is not to be found locally, I guess I will just continue having friends mail it to me from the Pacific Northwest.

If you like dry sausage, try South African droëwors sometime. Droëwors and biltong keep very well and are a lot tastier to me than regular jerky - usually have some in my pack. I'm sure you can google around for it.

I would just go to Lancaster and get it from specialty homes (not tourist stores) in Amish Country - its part of many deli meats in the salami area of the store... It is easier to buy on the internet and it is a form of preserved meats, its shelf life is in months almost six at room temp.

Here it is on Amazon

Thank you all for your suggestions!

Wise Old Owl - Thank you so very much for the Morse's suggestion! That sounds that the likeliest place I might find the landjaeger! If I don't find it at Morse's, it sounds like I might find other tasty treats there! :banana

I never heard of smoked landjaeger, but I'm quite familiar with Wisconsinmade. It was founded and is run in Madison by my wife's sister-in-law. We visit her and her husband on our occasional trips west. We chat often about the very successful business she founded after quitting the lawyering profession. We get a delicious box of Wisconsin cheeses from them every Christmas.

Its a great form of meat preservation and is one in many of a class of German Wurst and Bravarian, it's traditions is almost gone. Almost all the german folk over time have passed on in the Pocono's and the German Haus's have gone-The Resturant's still stand-shuttered or serving American food. My dad told me stories of the working class at Dupont getting together in the 60's at the cafeteria in Wilmington and eating sausages and wurst, from Poland, Germany, and other European countries... He loved to join them in conversation and lunch.

Wish I was on your Sister-in-Laws gift list.
