What are some songs that make you think back to the trail? Songs you use for slide shows of your photos from the trail? I have heard some great folk songs, but it would be nice to compile a longer list.

When I started to go insane during my thru hike, I began to sing on the trail. Luckily, no one ever heard me. Rocky Raccoon, You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, No Reply by The Beatles. Pancho and Lefty, City of New Orleans by Willie. A Man Needs a Maid, Needle and the Damage Done, Southern Man by Neil Young. And countless others that I can't remember now that I have regained a portion of my sanity.

I love all sorts of music on the trail - folk, rock, alt-country, americana and so forth but I latched onto this song my Mary Chapin Carpenter in 2010 and it has sort of become my trail anthem - - hope you'll have a listen:

I tend to set events and people I meet to music. Nothing like a week of:

"Teenage mutant ninja hikers! Legs like tree trunks, scuzzy as bikers."
Or:
"Taking a zero day, waiting for my buddy to come my way,
Taking a zero day, waiting for my buddy to come my way,
Left my phone in Bastian, I was hurryin' to catch a ride,
Got back on the trail, didn't have it and I could have died,
So I'm makin' this shelter my home,
Hopin' my buddy will bring me my phone,
Makin' this shelter my home, today......"

Sadly, I am most reminded of the trail by Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" because I got it in my head for an entire 22 mile day once. I really need to replace that memory...

My 6 year old has no idea what this song is about but loves it regardless - - she wants to hear it in the car over and over again - - I'm really sick of Gaga.

HALFWAY THERE

When the chips are down, back against the wall
Got no more to give 'cause we gave it all
Seems like going a distance is unrealistic
But we're too far from the start

So we take what comes and we keep on going
Leaning on each other's shoulders
Then we turn around and see we've come so far somehow

We're halfway there, we're looking good now
Nothing's gonna get in the way
We're halfway there and looking back now
I'd never thought that I'd ever say
We're halfway there, we're halfway there

Great tune. I sing it all the time. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is another "The Band" favorite that I like to sing.

"The Rambler"~Makem and Clancey

I'm a rambler I'm a gambler,I'm a long way from home

Mostly hymns, a favorite being Heavenly Sunlight:

Walking in sunlight, all of my journey;
Over the mountains, thro' the deep vale;
Jesus has said, "I'll never forsake thee,"
Promise divine that never can fail.

It really depends. If I'm coming up on something I think is really amazing, I usually hear the Jurassic Park theme.... Or if I'm just walking along bored, usually the LOTR theme..... It just depends on my mood....

Anybody remember the movie Last of the Mohicans? The slow-mo part where Daniel Day Lewis is running up the mountain had some of the most incredible music in a soundtrack (I thought at the time)--very powerful and moving. Anyhow, I thought it was so good that after I saw the movie I immediately went out and bought the CD soundtrack.

The name of the song is Promontory and I keep it on my iPod and play it whenever I have a huge hill to climb when hiking. Trust me, you will get up that hill if this is playing in your ears.

You can listen to it here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1ryJDVuZ6k) on YouTube if you're skeptical.

I love that song! I love that movie! "Stay alive! No matter what occurs! I will find you. No matter how long it takes!" LOL They just don't make men like that anymore. Sigh. :)

Double Wide: I don't know if you know this, but James Fenimore Cooper based The Last of the Mohicans book on a daring rescue by Daniel Boone. In 1776, his daughter, Jamima, and 2 teenage girls were captured by an Indian War Party outside of Boonesborough. Two days later, Boone and some men ambushed the Indians and rescued the girls. I always thought that was really interesting!

This is a song that I've got a real soft spot for when hiking. He's a local artist from Great Barrington, which is probably part of the I think of it as a trail song.

The Turtle Song - Jordan Weller.
