Consider Trailcooking.com and doing your own. Otherwise, Walmart prices are about as good as it gets for Mountain House or Coleman meal prices.

The Wal-Mart's around here no longer carry Mountain House. argggg. Chili Mac is my favorite, and the Pasta Primavera is pretty darn good. I tried some of the Coleman meals and I thought they were horrible. I actually threw them away when I got home.

I love the pasta primeavera.

You might want to look at amazon or rei and get the 10# cans. You can divvy them into individual servings from there. The ones not in use or opened will stay good for 3 years.

Personally, id look into getting a backpackers starting kit from harmony house foods and make yer own. Those foil bags can be purchased separately from other places. Rei has a MH chicken cuts in a 10# can, but I haven't tried them.

I found a site where I can buy bulk vacuum sealable foil boil bags for cheap, but I can't remember the name off the top of my head. Doing this sort of thing would avoid having to eat the same stuff over and over again.

Why not make your own trail foods like tact bread or trailmix. That would be the cheapest.

But MH, AlpineAire, etc. are cheap.

MRE's tend not to be, well at least the real thing.

Grab those foil packs of Tuna, some seasoning, rice and you are good to go.

I can get you Camp'N Trail food for rather low cost compared to Amazon, etc. http://www.amazon.com/Camp-CampN-Trail-Beef-Stroganoff/dp/B0020EHIQ8/

There are the lipton noodle packs....then add some tuna or chicken from the foil type packs.....the instant packs that are at any kroger work well as they can be as little as a $1 each. explore your local food stores as you explore the net to find hiking foods.

yeah makes sense but i want to grab foods with a less fishy smell i read a bit on bears along the trail i just rather not have a fishy smell around me,though love the tuna pouch it makes for a good meal just need a list of things of easy to carry and easy to make like said before this is going be short trip before the long one

On smells...honestly take what you want. Just keep a clean camp and your garbage kept animal safe. If you are in grizzly areas eat before you make camp - eat and then hike for another hour.

1+. I only do Mountain House meals as a convenience anymore. MRE's? Never. Just too plain heavy to lug around.

Purchase an Excalibur dehydrator and a vacuum seal machine at Walmart. You,ll have about $300 invested but it's a one time buy and you can charge it to your kitchenware account.

Then you can make your own meals for around $2.00 each and they are 10X better than the store bought stuff. You can make meals with nearly zero sodium and they'll last a couple years
