will do im very alert on whats going on around me whats the advice for camping i plan on traveling far as i can then blaze small trail off the AT to set up camp goood idea tips?
I have now section hiked the AT from Damascus to Central NH, short of 100 miles in VT that I had to skip last fall due to Hurricane Irene
PA is brutal, although I live in Philly, would rather drive further North or South to avoid the rocks............NOT FUN
I tell people the AT is NO TRAIL like they are visualizing. Its rugged, especially in PA.

The trails are not too bad in PA. Yes there are rocks but they are not bad.
Maybe it is because I hike the AT at least twice a week, almost all season unless we get a really bad snow storm.
Some recent trail pictures taken between Route 309 and Bake Oven Knob (sorry for the quality I used my Blackberry cell phone).

My favorite part of the AT in Pennsylvania is from the Maryland state line through the Cumberland Valley. Not too many rocks and lots of variety in the scenery (various hardwood and pine forests, and farmland and small towns). Pine Grove Furnace State Park has a free swimming beach right next to the trail. I live about an hour from this area and I return to hike it all the time. I never get tired of it.

The best way to start learning about wild edibles and taking pictures and samples of the plant (leaves, flowers, stems) while on the trail and when you are home identify them. Do this a couple times until you get good at identifying plants.
Also find a mentor, like myself, that will teach you about wild edible identification and uses.
What I did in the beginning was eat ONLY wild edibles that DID NOT have any poisonous twins.
I do not mess with mushrooms, not a big fan of them, but plan to next season.

The trail at Ricketts Glenn is great for swimming! A bit north though.

I've read that you can backcountry camp just about anywhere in PA. Is that true? These are excellent recommendations ( I REALLY appreciate the photos).
I've been looking for places to go in PA since I moved to DC a few months ago.
Yes you can Backcountry camp any place in PA just observe the "Leave No Trace" rules and you'll be fine:dance

Exactly. If you have a fairly "nice" car please have someone drop you off and pick you up. There has been some break ins. I drive an Audi for a daily work vehicle and a Jeep Wrangler for a weekend warrior, and although harder to break in my Audi was broken into while on a 3-day excursion.

Actually Pennsylvania is one of the most restricted parts of the trail for legal camping. Other than shelters most game lands (which the trail makes use of) do not allow any camping. There are long sections of the AT where no camping at all is allowed.
Check a guide book.

Regardless if i have to set up camping because didnt make it to a restriction free zone then its fair game better to camp down instead of blaze the trail at night an get lost

Im trying to find a map of the trail like a fold out map maybe one can even buy or get for free of some sort this way i can plan everything out mark spots etc

You can buy maps here. https://www.atctrailstore.org/ . Your purchase helps support the AT. You might also consider buying the Appalachian Trail Data Book, which lists distances from one place to another, both northbound and southbound, accurate to a tenth of a mile. I like it better than the maps, although I like to use the elevation profiles on the maps to see how much climbing I'm going to have to do each day.
Free printable online maps are available here, though I haven't used these. I checked a couple and they seem accurate enough. http://www.trailsource.com/appalachian-trail/?gclid=CPeN7Y_Y57ACFQjf4AodGRbg0A
Planning is at least half the fun!

Looks like a great place to train. Heat and humidity will probably be your worst enemy. Drink plenty of water even if you don't feel thirsty.

See the Used Gear For Sale forum here in the White Blaze forums.
Check out the dollar store for items like a cheap cook pot, flashlight, spoon, rope, etc. Goodwill and yard sales for used pack, sleeping bag and yoga mat to use as a sleeping pad. The expensive stuff makes your trip lighter weight and less work, but it's not necessary. We have some better gear now, but we've hiked with cheap gear for 30 years and we've survived it and keep going back for more.
We hike heavy. Here's a list I made to cover hiking needs from March through October. You won't need the cold weather stuff and changes of clothing aren't really necessary. A light blanket will be fine for sleeping will be fine instead of a sleeping bag.
____ tarp/tent and stakes ________________________
____ ground cloth ________________________ ____ thermarests or ridge rests ________________________ ____ sleeping bags ________________________
____ bear rope ________________________ ____ water bag, bottles ________________________ ____ iodine/filter, detergent ________________________ ____ matches, fire starters ________________________ ____ knife, spoons ________________________ ____ cook pot(s) ________________________ ____ bowls, cups ________________________
____ dinners, snacks, breakfasts ________________________
____ condiments, drinks, dry milk ________________________
____ flashlights ________________________
____ toilet paper ________________________
____ band aids, moleskin, tweezers ________________________ Q-tips, cotton balls, needle ________________________ ____ pack repair parts, tools ________________________
____ toothbrushes, toothpaste, comb ________________________
____ bug spray, sunscreen ________________________ ____ comb, pills ________________________ jackets, long johns ________________________ ____ rain jackets, pants, tevas ________________________
shirts, shorts/pants socks, underwear, bandanna maps, guide books yahtzee, camera
Sorry, this is supposed to be a checklist with spaces for notes and not a random assortment of items on the page! At least everything is here. You can print it and make changes that suit this particular hike. Hope this helps.
