If the National Park Service objects, we should all be paying attention:

"John Bunyak, head of the National Park Service's permit program, said the coke plant's emissions could add to the haze problems in Shenandoah National Park 110 miles away and damage already degraded streams there." Article Here (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05102/486795.stm)

I could be wrong but it appears to me that the permit was rushed through so the coke producer would not have to adhere to new regulation that was going into effect the next day. It seems to be a case of doing something that would help the local community and/or state without regard to hurt that may be inflicted 110 miles away.
The haze in SNP was linked to factories and power plants in the Ohio valley years ago. There has been progress and the smog has reduced in the past 10 or so years. I don't believe that the NPS, EPA or other people and agencies are going to overlook the permit issued to Sun Coke and let it continue as is. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and to see who pulled the strings that rushed the permit to be approved. After all, "The project was a priority for the governor". :-?

1. A report from the Seattle-Times

"J G. Drosdick
Chairman CEO and President
Sunoco Inc.

In 2004, J G. Drosdick raked in $13,756,680 in total compensation including stock option grants from Sunoco Inc..

From previous years' stock option grants, the Sunoco Inc. executive cashed out $25,806,225 in stock option exercises.

And J G. Drosdick has another $11,479,260 in unexercised stock options from previous years."

You can buy a lot of influence with that sort of cash.
