I'm pretty much done planning. The best planning is a section hike. Beyond that it should take care of itself. Pace yourself.

That said, T-minus 8 months for me as well..............

Nope
I'm not going to get excited until after New Year's Eve
Then w/ 13 weeks to go I'll start getting serious about the actual logistics of my thru hike
Right now I'm gettting this chunky body in shape by doing a lot of cycling and lot of swimming in the Gulf
To my way of thinking there is no substitute for being in good physical shape prior to hiking 2000 miles

I am excited for sure. I'll be leaving Montana January 29 and starting March 1. I'm trying to hike every possible weekend until the snow flies. My gear list is just about right. Luckily Missoula, Montana is a fine place to wait for the big day.

Same here, josh. It's a thought that is constantly present in my mind. I can not wait.

I would love to leave as early as possible, but mid Feb scares the Bejasus out of me. I'm a San Diego boy, it gets into the mid 60's and I'm on hypothermia watch.
i've been reading some of the old books back in the 50's/60's Garvey et al, they seemed like a real tough bunch of boys and girls, they talk about hiking in April in rain, snow and generally freezing their heinies off. Has it warmed up any in the last half century or so?
Good Luck. E.T.

Thank you, WIAPilot. That was really a great reminder of the good moments out there. Does the video have sound? My 'puter may have just been speechless.

Not only does the video have sound, its a song by John Couger (not a fan but this song is good and it fits) instead of that crappy bluegrass that a lot of people insist on attaching to vids. I recognize the vid as being done by a WB member.

Forgot to add that the vid is well worth the 3 1/2 minutes of time it takes to watch.

This video is excellent! However I find that most folks aren't able to show the most difficult times because they are simply too busy climbing. As beautiful as it is, expect it to be much tougher than you thought.

Truth be told ... I try not to think about it too much. That would be like watching water boil.

I focus on things like getting into trail shape, touching-base with friends and family, and enjoying activities I won't do while hiking (sailing, biking, hanging out at the beach, etc), and planning my cross country (post AT) vacation to explore route 66 while I get use to the real world again....

Don't get me wrong, I AM STOKED to have saved enough to see the fruition of a 20 year dream. I just think it would be hell to dwell on it too much before January 1st, 2013.
