Just talked to the backcountry ranger in the Smokies. We had to reroute our Smokies Hike because Cosby Knob Shelter is closed due to bear activity:eek:. Thought some hikers might need to know.
I am hiking from Newfound Gap to Hot Springs, NC the week of July 4th. I will have to get off the AT and stay my 2nd night at campground #29 rather than Cosby Knob Shelter. Where have you been re-routed?

If you're starting at Newfound Gap, why not hike into Tricorner Knob shelter, then hit Davenport Gap Shelter on day 2? It should be pretty easy to avoid that shelter and the hike from Cosby Knob to Davenport Gap is all downhill, pretty easy walking.

Just did that a few days ago. Pretty easy to just keep going and stay at Standing Bear.
Just talked to the Backcountry office yesterday. Cosby Knob has been reopened, and the bear has apparently been relocated.
I am hiking from Newfound Gap to Hot Springs, NC beginning Sunday, July 1st. I called the Smokies Backcountry Office yesterday, June 28th, to double check my itinerary and was informed the Cosby Knob Shelter is now open. I have a reservation for Monday, July 2nd. I thought anyone hiking this section should know of the change.
