Considering doing the section from Grayson to Damascus over the July 4 holiday. What's the IMT like, more privacy, water? Using my hammock; buddy has a tarptent. I'd appreciate anyone's suggestions or experiences.

Thanks,

easy walkin', plenty of water, more privacy for sure. there are 3 shelters along it. horses and bikes sometimes use the trail

I just hiked it a month or so ago. Saw 2 guys on horseback and one AT hiker - other than that I had it all to myself.

Like LW said, easy walking, lots of water and plenty of campsites. I've hiked the AT and the IMT and the IMT is a better trail IMO.

If you want some real fun, stay on the IMT south of Damascus to TN 91. Totally different trail. Steep ups and downs, much more wild and almost no water for 18 miles Saw more bear skat in 2 miles than I've seen in my life combined. Got about 30 yards or so from a bear during a thunderstorm.

And sometimes motorcross bikes.

Thanks everyone. The south part would be a nice addition to the hike. I'll have to take another look at how to get back to my car in Damascus. (Planning start with shuttle to Grayson, leaving car at MRO.)

Jump on the AT at TN 91 and hike back to Damascus.

That hike from TN 91 to Damascus is about the longest, easiest stretch of trail south of Maryland.

+1 for what 10-K said the loop Nobo on the AT from NC 91 Cross mountain to Damascus and Sobo on the IMT is a great 43 mile loop.
