I've created a new thread for reports about this fire, which had been included in a thread about fires now expanding in Shenandoah National Park.
On Tuesday, a fire broke out in the Veach Gap area of George Washington National Forest, in the northern section of Massanutten Mt. Following is an update today (6/29) posted on the PATC website....
The Lee District Office of the George Washington National Forest reports the wildfire on Massanutten Mountain between Veach Gap and Sherman Gap poses a potential threat to homes and private land to the east and to the west.
At this time, the estimated extent of the fire is 353 acres, and the fire is 5% contained.
The Massanutten National Recreation Trail is closed from Shawl Gap To Veach Gap. The Tuscarora Trail is closed from Shawl Gap to Panhandle Road (SR613). The Sherman Gap and Veach Gap Trails are closed. Little Crease Shelter (at Veach Gap) is closed and inaccessible.
Travelers and forest users are referred to the Forest Service at (540) 984-4101 for the most current fire information.
