Ugh! It's going to be 108 today!! :sun Um I would think 108 is expected...you live in AZ after all. Not to be rude but that is void of vital information...as you live there by choice. MNS thank you very much for letting Hikers know how hot it is...on trail let alone the risks they make by hiking. Would suggest to all hikers regardless if they live in the desert or not. Hunker down somewhere cool if you can hopefully find such a location. Drink large amounts of water as needed. As well if you need to make those big miles as well are feel the need to. Hike during the night pref with friends or fellow hikers...it may not be cooler but the sun wont be at your back.

Don't hike during the heat of the day if you can help it (noon - 3pm), but find some shade and use as little energy as possible. Stay hydrated!

68 degrees here, expecting a high of 84. This is the season to be in Montana. Right after the seven months of winter and right before the whole place is a smoldering mess.

Yesterday our thermometer (has a reader outside under the porch ceiling, in the shade) indicated 107.5 around 3 pm. Today it's "only" in the 90's. Dew point is very high, though, so t'storms are very likely to bubble up soon.

And thus why I will never live in the northwest again. Spent the longest year of my life in Portland Oregon. Nearly went mad in that weather. Some of us simply cannot endure the almost-constant rain, cool temps and overcast. More power to those who can. Many can't endure the heat and humidity and winters that we have......but I love every moment of all of our seasons.

It's very pleasant in San Diego. People from elsewhere call this the desert.

This sucks - I spent the weekend soaking in Seed Lake (Talullah River) - - headed to Vermont and New Hampshire next week - - hiking from Rutland, Vt through NH to Maine - - hope that it it is at least cool and breezy for me.

It's not like that here... I believe that your memory is accentuating the negative.
There's lots of sunny weather, especially in the summer, and it rains a lot less (39"/year) than it does on the horribly hot east coast.
Perfect hiking weather. We went out Sunday for 13 miles in the Cascade foothills. Ideal hiking temps in the 60's. When it does rain it's more of a mist; we rarely even need raincoats.
Just as well that it's cloudy, otherwise I would have skin cancer by now.

Air temp is in the upper 90's today, but the Lake MI water temperature is 70. We have a park where you hike about 1/2 mile over hills and through the trees to get to an isolated beach completely surrounded by towering sand dunes. Even on a holiday you can have it mostly to yourself.

We have been in the 100s for some time now. It was 109 a week ago already. We will not see any relief til October. I kind of like it.

It is a good thing you like it, Phlox, because there isn't a whole lot you can do about it. Here at Sugar Grove it has been hot, but the real difficulty is like yesterday afternoon in the 90s with no breeze. I'm 3.7 miles from the trail and have felt sorry for anyone out there recently. Sometimes that has been because of the rain though. Up on the ridge in Vermont is where it is really nice in July. It is worth planning a leapfrog to North Adams going north in your planning.

It has been pretty miserable here in Georgia the past week or so, I have been trying to get some hikes in during the heat just to get used to it and find out how much water I go through on a hot day. There are going to be some hot days on my through hike next year so I might as well get used to hiking in the heat now. So long as I stay on a mostly shady trail it's not too bad, when you are out directly under the sun it is awful. I think what will be worse is trying to fall asleep when it is still 80+ at 3 in the morning.

I completely agree with you. And if you do a traditional NOBO thruhike, you'll experience that because you're arriving in the Mid-Atlantic with its low elevations and high humidity in mid-summer. I joined a thruhiking friend in '04 when he reached NJ. I was supposed to hike 10 days with him but I quit on the 4th day and decided to return to section hike NJ and NY in cooler weather. Cowboy camping is not an option unless you want to battle the mosquitoes.

I've section-hiked the whole trail but were I to attempt a thruhike, I'd do one of the following:

Do a straight SOBO
Start mid-March at Harpers Ferry, hike south to Springer, go to Maine in mid-August, hike south to Harpers Ferry
Same as 2. but hike the Springer-Harpers Ferry part NOBO.

Basically take mid-June to mid-August off from the AT. Stay in shape by going out to the Rockies or Sierra and backpack or day-hike.

It's 104 or so today in DC. I took a look at the weather forecast and decided it would be a good week to take off, heal and switch out come gear. I'll be back on the trail on Monday when it's back in the comfortable mid 80's with new shoes, clothes and a much needed beard trim. Like others said, skip the midday heat. Wake early and roll, rest, then roll again in the late afternoon till 8 or so. Eat, sleep, repeat. Hydrate or die!

I was on the AT over the 4th near the GA / NC border and even 5000+ feet it was well into the 80's with high humidity and too hot at night to fall asleep easily. I always have turned to the mountains for some summer relief but even that is turning into a futile effort nowadays.

Could be worse I guess, it was 105 today here in Raleigh with stifling humidity as always. I worry my home HVAC is gonna explode from all the constant running.
